Harry McNish
Henry McNish (11 September 187424 September 1930), often referred to as Harry McNish or by the nickname Chippy, was the carpenter on Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917. He was responsible for much of the work that ensured the crew's survival after their ship, the ''Endurance (1912 ship), Endurance'', was destroyed when it became trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea. He modified the small boat, ''Voyage of the James Caird, James Caird'', that allowed Shackleton and five men (including McNish) to make a voyage of hundreds of miles to fetch help for the rest of the crew. After the expedition he returned to work in the Merchant Navy (United Kingdom), Merchant Navy and eventually emigrated to New Zealand, where he worked on the docks in Wellington until poor health forced his retirement. Bertha "Chippie" Hill (March 15, 1905 – May 7, 1950), was an American blues and vaudeville singer and dancer, best known for her recordings with Louis Armstrong. Career Hill was born in Charleston, South Carolina, one of sixteen children. The family moved to New York in 1915. She began her career as a dancer in Harlem and by 1919 was working with Ethel Waters. Charles "Chippy" Simmons (9 September 1878 – 12 December 1937) was an English footballer who played as a centre-forward. He played in the Football League for West Bromwich Albion and Chesterfield Town. Biography Simmons was born in West Bromwich and turned professional with West Bromwich Albion in April 1898. On 3 September 1900 Simmons became the first Albion player to score at The Hawthorns, when he equalised Derby County player Steve Bloomer's goal in a 1–1 draw. He moved to West Ham United for £700 in July 1904 and made 34 league apps scoring 8 goals (1 FA cup app, 0 goals), but returned to Albion for £600 just ten months later. David "Chippy" Robinson (1897–1967) was a St. Louis armed robber and contract killer responsible for many crimes during the Prohibition era. He was a top ranking member of the Egan's Rats gang. Born David Michael Robison in the North Side neighborhood of Baden, Robinson joined the Rats as a young man in the mid-1910s. Along with Tony Ortell, Chippy was caught burglarizing a North Side gas station on August 18, 1918 when Charles Hoffman surprised them. Hoffman was shot and killed but not before he wounded Robinson. William A. Naughton (16 July 1870 – 23 April 1906) was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as an outside-forward for various clubs in Scotland and England in the 1880s and 1890s, including Celtic, Stoke and Southampton.
