Daniel Zmeko
General Daniel Zmeko (born November 24, 1967 in Nové Mesto nad Váhom) is a Slovak military leader who is the current Chief of the General Staff (Slovakia), Chief of the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces. Biography He was born on 24 November 1967 in Nové Mesto nad Váhom in the then-Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. He joined the Czechoslovak People's Army in 1982 at the age of 14. He attended the Military Secondary High School in Banská Bystrica from 1982-1986. He was enrolled in the Land Forces College at Vyškov na Morave from 1986-1990. He was one of the first to complete the National Defense Course at the General Milan Rastislav Štefánik Slovak Armed Forces Academy. He served during Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 26 April 2018, Zmeko was appointed to this post and promoted to lieutenant general. His position and rank entered into force on 7 May. The president of the Slovak Republic ( sk, Prezident Slovenskej republiky) is the head of state of Slovakia and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. The president is directly elected by the people for five years, and can be elected for a maximum of two consecutive terms. The presidency is largely a ceremonial office, but the president does exercise certain limited powers with absolute discretion. The president's official residence is the Grassalkovich Palace in Bratislava. History of the office The office was established by the constitution of Slovakia on 1 January 1993 when Slovakia permanently split from Czechoslovakia and became independent. The office was vacant until 2 March 1993, when the first president Michal Kováč was elected by the National Council of Slovak Republic. The Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic were divided from the Czechoslovak army after dissolution of Czechoslovakia on 1 January 1993. Slovakia joined NATO on 29 March 2004.
