Chief Of Defence (Denmark)
The Chief of Defence of Denmark (), acting under the statutory responsibility of the Minister of Defence, is the chief of defence and commander of the Royal Danish Army, the Royal Danish Navy and the Royal Danish Air Force. The Chief of Defence is the principal military adviser to the Minister of Defence and the head of the Defence Command. The Chief of Defence is the highest-ranking military officer on active duty in the Danish Armed Forces and has the rank of four-star General (or Admiral if from the Navy) (OF-9), and supervises roughly 93% of all military spending in Denmark. The Danish Home Guard and Defence intelligence is directly under the Ministry of Defence, only in times of war will the Home Guard Command be transferred to the Defence Command, and thus come under the authority of the Chief of Defence. Danish Defence ( da, Forsvaret, fo, Danska verjan, kl, Illersuisut) is the unified armed forces of the Kingdom of Denmark charged with the defence of Denmark and its constituent, self-governing nations Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Admiral (Denmark)
is the highest rank of the Royal Danish Navy. As a four-star rank it is the equivalent to the rank of general in the Royal Danish Army and Air force. The rank is rated OF-9 within NATO. It has the grade of M406 within the Ministry of Defence's pay structure. The rank of Admiral is reserved for the Chief of Defence and the King À la suite. Knud Bartels
Knud Bartels (8 April 1952) is a retired Danish general, who served as the Danish Chief of Defence between 2009 and 2011 and was Chairman of the NATO Military Committee from 2011 to 2015. Early life Bartels was born in Copenhagen in 1952, and is the son of Eyvind Bartels, who served as Danish ambassador in OEEC and later Washington, Knud Bartels, therefore spent much of his childhood abroad, living many years in Paris. He joined the army in 1972, and went to Royal Danish Military Academy the following year. Bjørn Bisserup
Bjørn Ingemann Bisserup (born 13 April 1960 in Copenhagen) is a Danish General, who served as acting Chief of Defence in 2009 and 2012, before becoming Chief of Defence in 2017. He left the role in December of 2020. Hans Jesper Helsø
Hans Jesper Helsø (born July 9, 1948), is a former Danish Chief of Defence. Helsø served his conscription in 1968 and initially became sergeant and officer of the reserve. In 1974 he becomes lieutenant and served the following four years at King's Artillery Regiment. In 1982-83 he is - as a captain - at the General Staff Course in the United States. In 1990 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel and come back to the artillery as Head of Department for a few years. After a short staff service at the Army Operational Command, he became Head of the King's Artillery Regiment between 1994 and 1996. In 2000-02, he is Chief of the Army Operational Command, and then Chief of Operations and Planning Staffs until his appointment as Chief of Defence. Hans Jørgen Garde (22 January 1939 in Frederiksberg – 3 August 1996 on Vágar, Faroe Islands) was a Danish admiral. Garde was the Danish Chief of Defence from 1 April 1996 until his death. Jørgen Lyng
Jørgen Lyng (born 7 March 1934), is a retired Danish general and a former Chief of Defence of Denmark. As a young soldier Lyng received training from SAS, this training among other, enabled him to help establish and complete training for Jægerkorpset. He was made Chief of Defence in 1989, only a week before the fall of the Berlin wall. In 1990, he order HDMS Olfert Fischer to the Persian Gulf, in order to participate in the First Gulf War, thereby starting Denmark's more active foreign policy. This led to the creation of the Danish International Brigade in 1993 and participation in the NATO led in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Operation Bøllebank became the first combat operation conducted by Danish Armed Forces since World War II.
