Jørgen Lyng
Jørgen Lyng (born 7 March 1934), is a retired Danish general and a former Chief of Defence of Denmark. As a young soldier Lyng received training from SAS, this training among other, enabled him to help establish and complete training for Jægerkorpset. He was made Chief of Defence in 1989, only a week before the fall of the Berlin wall. In 1990, he order HDMS Olfert Fischer to the Persian Gulf, in order to participate in the First Gulf War, thereby starting Denmark's more active foreign policy. This led to the creation of the Danish International Brigade in 1993 and participation in the NATO led in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Operation Bøllebank became the first combat operation conducted by Danish Armed Forces since World War II. Order Of The Dannebrog
The Order of the Dannebrog ( da, Dannebrogordenen) is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes. The ''Grand Commander'' class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is awarded only to royalty with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order. Today, the Order of the Dannebrog is a means of honouring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life, or for working for Danish interests. Guard Hussar Regiment Mounted Squadron
The Guard Hussar Regiment Mounted Squadron ( da, Gardehusarregimentets Hesteskadron, HESK), is part of the Guard Hussar Regiment. The purpose of the squadron is to provide mounted escorts for the Royal family and carry ceremonial services for the Royal Danish Army. The squadron commands 75 horses, 18 officers and NCOs, and 75-100 conscripts. In addition it has a saddler, music-teacher, veterinarian, remount service and a farrier. History In 1762, there was a possibility of war between Denmark and Russia. The general staff was wary of the coming battle, due to the Cossacks, and Denmark's inability to counter the light cavalry. Inspired by the Hungarian hussars, Denmark created their own hussar regiment and adopted a similar uniform. Conscription The conscripts serve for 1 year, the longest time for a conscript in Denmark, with two troops starting each year, in February and August. Jørgen Garde
Hans Jørgen Garde (22 January 1939 in Frederiksberg – 3 August 1996 on Vágar, Faroe Islands) was a Danish admiral. Garde was the Danish Chief of Defence from 1 April 1996 until his death. Sven (in Danish and Norwegian, also Svend and also in Norwegian most commonly Svein) is a Scandinavian first name which is also used in the Low Countries and German-speaking countries. The name itself is Old Norse for "young man" or "young warrior". The original spelling in Old Norse was ''sveinn''. Badges Of The Danish Military
Badges of the Danish Military are military decorations issued to soldiers who achieve a variety of qualifications and accomplishments while serving active or reserve duty in the Danish military. They are worn, on the service dress or barracks dress, either right above or on the breast pocket, depending on whether there are Danish Parachutist Brevets. There is no limit to the number worn and there is no designated order for the badges. The badges were first created by the Danish Brigade in Exile, in order to show proficiency. It did however not see official and wide use until the 1950s, when standardized versions were introduced. Long Service Awards (Denmark)
The primary governmental uniformed services of Denmark have Long Service Medals that may be awarded after 25 years of service. Besides the normal 25 year medals, the Order of Dannebrog may also be awarded to high-ranking officers after 25 years service, or sometimes as a retirement-decoration. After 40 years of public service the Medal of Merit may be awarded. Armed Forces Ribbon of the Long Service Medal for Army, Airforce, Navy and Department of Defense The Navy Long Service Medal (Danish: ''Hæderstegnet for God Tjeneste ved Søetaten'') was instituted in 1801 by King Christian VII and may be awarded to any member of the Navy after 25 years of good service. After 40 years of service a gold oakleaf is added to the ribbon.
