Knud Bartels
Knud Bartels (8 April 1952) is a retired Danish general, who served as the Danish Chief of Defence between 2009 and 2011 and was Chairman of the NATO Military Committee from 2011 to 2015. Early life Bartels was born in Copenhagen in 1952, and is the son of Eyvind Bartels, who served as Danish ambassador in OEEC and later Washington, Knud Bartels, therefore spent much of his childhood abroad, living many years in Paris. He joined the army in 1972, and went to Royal Danish Military Academy the following year. He went on tour on the UN mission to Cypres in 1980, and became Denmark's Permanent Representative on NATO's Military Committee in 2006. Order Of The Dannebrog
The Order of the Dannebrog ( da, Dannebrogordenen) is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes. The ''Grand Commander'' class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is awarded only to royalty with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order. Today, the Order of the Dannebrog is a means of honouring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life, or for working for Danish interests. The primary governmental uniformed services of Denmark have Long Service Medals that may be awarded after 25 years of service. Besides the normal 25 year medals, the Order of Dannebrog may also be awarded to high-ranking officers after 25 years service, or sometimes as a retirement-decoration. After 40 years of public service the Medal of Merit may be awarded. Armed Forces Ribbon of the Long Service Medal for Army, Airforce, Navy and Department of Defense The Navy Long Service Medal (Danish: ''Hæderstegnet for God Tjeneste ved Søetaten'') was instituted in 1801 by King Christian VII and may be awarded to any member of the Navy after 25 years of good service.
