Chen Weiming (sculptor)
Chen Weiming (, born c. 1970) is a Chinese-born New Zealand artist and sculptor. Chen was commissioned by the New Zealand government to create a 3-metre bronze statue of Edmund Hillary in 1991. In 2008, he created a 6.4 metres high replica of the Goddess of Democracy that stood in the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 23 December 2021.faz.net''Hongkonger Denkmalsturm zu Weihnachten''/ref> In June 2021 and June 2022, Chen unveiled a pair of 30-foot-high sculptures at Yermo's open-air High Desert art centre called Liberty Sculpture Park. Hong Kong's ''Goddess of Democracy'' is a 6.4-metre faux bronze statue sculpted by Chen Weiming, inspired by the original 10-metre tall ''Goddess of Democracy''. The original foam and papier-mâché statue was erected by the Chinese pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square at the end of May 1989, and destroyed by soldiers clearing the protesters from Tiananmen square on June 4, 1989. Three successive political controversies surrounded the statue in 2010 in the backdrop to the twenty-first anniversary of the suppression of the Tiananmen pro-democracy movement. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) ( ar, الجيش السوري الحر, al-jaysh as-Sūrī al-ḥur) is a loose faction in the Syrian Civil War founded on 29 July 2011 by officers of the Syrian Armed Forces with the goal of bringing down the government of Bashar al-Assad.
