The Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club (CLYC) is a private yacht club located in Lakewood, New York, on the south shore of Chautauqua Lake. Fleets The club was a powerhouse of the Snipe International Class, and still holds number 124 in the listing of Snipe fleets around the world. In that class, CLYC hosted the world championship in 1946, the North Americans in 1979, and the Nationals in 1949, 1958 and 1966, while producing two SCIRA Commodores: Harold Griffith (1949) and Edward "Red" Garfield (1960). Lakewood is a village in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 2,993 at the 2020 census. The village is in the northern part of the town of Busti. Geography Lakewood is located at (42.100929, -79.321919), at the south end of Chautauqua Lake. New York State Route 394 passes through the village as Fairmount Avenue, leading east to the center of Jamestown and northwest to Interstate 86 where it crosses Chautauqua Lake. United States Snipe National Championship
The United States National Snipe Championship is the annual national championship for sailing in the Snipe class. It is among the oldest One-Design class championships in the United States. Between 1934 and 1947 it was considered the SCIRA World Championship, with the winning skipper receiving the Commodore Hub E. Isaacks Trophy, but as the event became international after World War II, SCIRA's commodore Charles Heinzerling created a separate trophy for the USA champion and since then the winning skipper is awarded the ''Commodore Charles E. Heinzerling Trophy'', and the winning crew is awarded the ''Portage Lakes Yacht Club Trophy''. When the fleet is large enough, the Snipe Nationals are held in two parts. Optimist Dinghy
The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by young people up to the age of 15. The Optimist is one of the two most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered. It is sailed in over 120 countries and it is one of only two sailboats as an International Class by World Sailing exclusively for sailors under 16. Origin The Optimist was designed in 1947 by American Clark Mills at the request of the Clearwater Florida Optimist service club following a proposal by Major Clifford McKay to offer low-cost sailing for young people. SCIRA
SCIRA is the acronym by which the Snipe Class International Racing Association is known. SCIRA is the governing body of the Snipe international class in the sport of sailing recognized by the International Sailing Federation. History SCIRA was established in November 1932, and Hub E. Isaacks of Snipe fleet number 1 at Dallas Sailing Club was the first commodore. In march, 1933, SCIRA chartered fleet number 8 to the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club in Dover Harbour, Kent, becoming the first fleet established outside the United States.
