SCIRA
SCIRA is the acronym by which the Snipe Class International Racing Association is known. SCIRA is the governing body of the Snipe international class in the sport of sailing recognized by the International Sailing Federation. History SCIRA was established in November 1932, and Hub E. Isaacks of Snipe fleet number 1 at Dallas Sailing Club was the first commodore. In march, 1933, SCIRA chartered fleet number 8 to the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club in Dover Harbour, Kent, becoming the first fleet established outside the United States. By 1936, the Snipe Class became the world's largest racing class. Board officers Jerelyn Biehl, the paid, full time Executive Director, runs the Snipe Class International Racing Association (SCIRA) office. Snipe (dinghy)
The Snipe is an American sailing dinghy that was designed by William F. Crosby as a one design racer and first built in 1931. The boat is a World Sailing recognized international class. Sailboatdata.com summarizes the design as "one of the most popular sailing dinghies ever. (In its heyday, the largest sailboat racing class). Origins in the US. Birger Jansen
Birger Jansen (7 January 1948 – 7 November 2016) was a Norwegian ice hockey player and sailor. He was born in Bærum and represented the clubs Jar IL and IF Frisk Asker. He played for the Norwegian national ice hockey team, and participated at the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972, where the Norwegian team placed 8th out of 11 teams. He was European champion in the Snipe class in 2000, Masters World Champion in 1996, and many times Norwegian champion. He also placed third at the 1991 Snipe Worlds. Richard L. Tillman, known as Dick Tillman, (November 27, 1936 – October 14, 2020) was an American sailor. He was a member of the United States sailing team at the 1976 Summer Olympics as an alternate and was named US Sailor of the Year in 1965. He started sailing as a teenager at Wawasee Yacht Club crewing for Alan (Buzz) Levinson, his older brother Frank and his younger brother, Harry, in their Snipes.
