Chatham Heights is an unincorporated community in Stafford County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. Geography Chatham Heights is located above sea level along the Rappahannock River, east of the city of Fredericksburg and southeast of the census-designated place of Falmouth. Transportation Chatham Heights is bisected by Virginia State Route 212 (Chatham Heights Road), which passes north–south through the community. The community also served by Virginia State Route 218 (which connects the community to U.S. Route 1) in the north and Virginia Route 3 Business in the south. Fredericksburg Regional Transit provides its FRED bus service in the community. RF&P Subdivision
The RF&P Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation. It runs from Washington, D.C., to Richmond, Virginia, over lines previously owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. The line's name pays homage to that railroad, which was a predecessor to the CSX. Route description At the northern (eastern) end of the line, the RF&P Sub connects to the Capital Subdivision, which runs to Baltimore, Maryland. Just before the Anacostia Railroad Bridge on the Capital Sub is the Virginia Avenue Tunnel. Fredericksburg Regional Transit or FRED is a bus transit system that operates in and around Fredericksburg, VA. It provides year-round bus service to Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg, with commuter shuttles to the Fredericksburg station for connections to Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express. Chatham Manor
Chatham Manor is a Georgian-style mansion home completed in 1771 by farmer and statesman William Fitzhugh, after about three years of construction, on the Rappahannock River in Stafford County, Virginia, opposite Fredericksburg. It was for more than a century the center of a large, thriving plantation, and the only private residence in the United States to be visited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Chatham also reflected the new country's racial tensions. In January 1805, Chatham's slaves overpowered and whipped their overseer and assistants in a minor slave rebellion. An armed posse of white men quickly gathered. They killed one slave in the attack, and two more died trying to escape capture.
