Charles Ling
Charles X. Ling (Chinese name: 凌晓峰) is a computer scientist who specializes in research on Data Mining and Machine Learning. He obtained his BSc from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1985, and PhD from University of Pennsylvania in 1989. He is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Science Distinguished Research Professor, at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He has published over 150 refereed papers in international journals and conferences. He is a Senior member of IEEE. He is co-author of book Crafting Your Research Future - A Guide to Successful Master's and Ph.D. Degrees in Science & Engineering. Machine learning (ML) is a field of inquiry devoted to understanding and building methods that 'learn', that is, methods that leverage data to improve performance on some set of tasks. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU; ) is a public research university in Shanghai, China. The university is funded by the Ministry of Education of China. The university was established on April 8, 1896 as Nanyang Public School (南洋公學) by an imperial edict. The university is a member of the C9 League, Double First Class University Plan, Project 985, and Project 211. The university underwent a number of reformations and gained its current name in 1959.
