Charles Harper (mayor)
Charles Harper (1954) was a Western Australian businessman and mayor of two local governments. Harper was a councillor of the Municipality of Victoria Park from 1905 and served as Mayor from 1909 to 1917 when the municipality was amalgamated into the City of Perth. From 1937 to 1939 he served as Lord Mayor of Perth. He came to Perth from Melbourne and 1895, and later established a business, Charles Harper and Co., situated in Cremorne Arcade between Hay Street and Murray Street in the city. The company were importers of musical instruments including pianos and organs. Harper died in 1954. Municipality Of Victoria Park
The Municipality of Victoria Park was a local government area in the inner eastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. It was first established as the Victoria Park Road District on 17 May 1894. The first election was held on 9 July 1894. The road board was reconstituted as the Municipality of Victoria Park on 30 April 1897. It had, at that time, an area of 4,198 acres, a population of 1,197 and 350 dwellings. The reconstituted municipality consisted of a chairman and six councillors, with two auditors, increasing to nine councillors in 1898 due to a rising population. The municipal boundaries were extended on 27 April 1900. The municipality built a town hall on Albany Highway as their new headquarters in 1899, opening on 11 September that year. It remained a meeting and function venue for many years afterwards, but was demolished in 1983. Hay Street, Perth
Hay Street is a major road through the central business district of Perth, Western Australia and adjacent suburbs. The street was named after Robert William Hay, the Permanent Under Secretary for Colonies. Sections of the road were called Howick Street and Twiss Street until 1897. One block in the central business section is now a pedestrian mall with extremely limited vehicular traffic, so that it is necessary to make a significant detour in order to drive the entire length of Hay Street. Route description Orientated east-west, the road starts at The Causeway travelling west through the suburbs of East Perth, Perth, West Perth, and Subiaco, where the road originally terminated at Subiaco. Unusually, the street numbers reset to 1 when Hay Street crosses Thomas Street and enters Subiaco. Murray Street, Perth
Murray Street is one of four main east-west roads within the Perth central business district (CBD). History The street, the central portion of which has become a pedestrian mall, was named after Sir George Murray, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1828 to 1830. It is the one main road in Perth that has an eastern ending at a churchthe Roman Catholic St Mary's Cathedral; the other major churches in the CBD are on the sides of the city streets. The western end of Murray Street also once had a church with St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church sitting on Havelock Street opposite the end of Murray Street.
