Charles Drake (actor)
Charles Drake (born Charles Ruppert; October 2, 1917 – September 10, 1994) was an American actor. Biography Drake was born in New York City. He graduated from Nichols College and became a salesman. In 1939, he turned to acting and signed a contract with Warner Bros., but he was not immediately successful. During World War II, Drake served in the United States Army. Drake returned to Hollywood in 1945 and was cast in ''Conflict'' which starred Humphrey Bogart. His contract with Warner Brothers eventually ended. In the 1940s, he did some freelance work, including ''A Night in Casablanca'' (1946). In 1949, he moved to Universal Studios, where he co-starred with James Stewart and Shelley Winters in ''Winchester '73'' (1950) and again co-starred with Stewart in the film ''Harvey'' (also 1950) a screen adaptation of the Broadway play. Charles Edward Springall (19 June 1925 – 23 December 2006), known professionally as Charlie Drake, was an English comedian, actor, writer and singer. With his small stature (5' 1"/155 cm tall), curly red hair and liking for slapstick, he was a popular comedian with children in his early years, becoming nationally known for his "Hello, my darlings!" catchphrase. Early life Born Charles Edward Springall in the Elephant and Castle, Southwark, South London, he took his mother's maiden name for the stage and, later, film and television, achieving success as a comedian. Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Drake Garrard (baptized 23 December 1755 – 17 July 1817), born Charles Drake was a British land-owner and Member of Parliament for Amersham between 1796 and 1805. Early life and family Charles Drake was baptised on 23 December 1755, the fourth son of William Drake, a long-standing Member of Parliament for Amersham, and his wife, Elizabeth, a daughter of John Raworth of London, a director of the South Seas Company. Drake inherited the estate of his (great-grandmother's) cousin Benet Garrard, sixth Baronet, in 1767, and added the name Garrard to his surname (see Garrard Baronets). Charles Bryant Drake (September 14, 1872 – August 14, 1956) was a United States Army officer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Biography Drake was born in Old Forge, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, on September 14, 1872, to a family that had resided in the country since before the American Revolutionary War. After graduating from Wyoming Seminary, Drake won a competitive examination and entered the United States Military Academy in 1892, graduating in 1896. Drake was commissioned in the Fifth Cavalry at Fort Sam Houston, and he later served at Fort McIntosh, Texas, Fort Brown, and in Huntsville, Alabama. After sailing to Bayamón, Puerto Rico, with his unit in January 1899, Drake was promoted to first lieutenant and stationed in Fort Yates, North Dakota, and Fort Yellowstone with the First Cavalry. Charles George Drake (July 21, 1920 – September 15, 1998) was a Canadian neurosurgeon known for his work on treating aneurysms. Born in Windsor, Ontario, he received his BSc and MD degrees from The University of Western Ontario. From 1974 until 1984 he was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario. In 1986, he co-founded the Robarts Research Institute, which was Canada's only independent medical research centre until its recent merger with the university. While he practiced, he was a member of The Harvey Club of London, the oldest medical club in Canada. Charles Edward Drake III (September 5, 1981 – July 6, 2012) was an American football player who was picked in the 7th round of the 2003 NFL draft and played briefly in the National Football League. Drake also played professionally in the Austrian Football League and NFL Europe. A native of Los Angeles, Drake played high school football at Westchester High School, where he was selected as an all-city running back. Drake committed to play college football at the University of Michigan as part of the incoming class of 1999. He played at Michigan from 1999 to 2002.
