Channels is a rock band based in Baltimore, Maryland Maryland ( ) is a U.S. state, state in the Mid-Atlantic (United States), Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It borders the states of Virginia to its south, West Virginia to its west, Pennsylvania to its north, and Delaware to its east ..., formed in 2003. The band features Jawbox and Burning Airlines frontman J. Robbins, as well as bassist Janet Morgan and drummer Darren Zentek of Kerosene 454 and Oswego. Channels features Morgan on co-lead and backing vocals—giving the band a melodic approach to the vocals. Channels features Robbins' most lyrically political writing. Robbins and Zentek also currently perform with Vic Bondi as Report Suspicious Activity. Both musicians released an EP as Office of Future Plans (along with Brooks Harlan and Gordon Withers) and have released material on DeSoto Records and Dischord Records. Doo Wop
Doo-wop (also spelled doowop and doo wop) is a subgenre of rhythm and blues music that originated in African-American communities during the 1940s, mainly in the large cities of the United States, including New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Baltimore, Newark, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. It features vocal group harmony that carries an engaging melodic line to a simple beat with little or no instrumentation. Lyrics are simple, usually about love, sung by a lead vocal over background vocals, and often featuring, in the bridge, a melodramatically heartfelt recitative addressed to the beloved. Jawbox
Jawbox is an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., formed in 1989. The band currently consists of J. Robbins (vocals/guitar), Kim Coletta (bass), Zach Barocas (drums), and Brooks Harlan (guitars/vocals). The original lineup consisted of Robbins, Coletta, and Adam Wade (drums). Jawbox released their first two full-lengths '' Grippe'' (1991) and ''Novelty'' (1992) on the local independent label Dischord Records, eventually becoming the third best-selling band on the label, behind Minor Threat and Fugazi. Bill Barbot joined the band as an additional guitarist and vocalist after the release of ''Grippe'', and Barocas replaced Wade on drums after the release of ''Novelty''. Burning Airlines
Burning Airlines was an American rock band from Washington, D.C. J. Robbins and Bill Barbot of Jawbox formed the band with Peter Moffett (formerly of Government Issue) in 1997. The band released two full-length albums, a self-titled 7", and split releases with At the Drive-In and Braid. The band's name is taken from a Brian Eno song, "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More" from his 1974 album ''Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)''. History Robbins and Barbot had jammed with Moffett while their band Jawbox was still active, briefly considering him to fill in after drummer Zach Barocas' departure. However, this lineup was not to be, and Jawbox called it quits shortly thereafter. Kerosene 454 was a punk rock band from Washington, D.C. They formed in 1992. The core of the group, brothers John and Jim Wall along with Erik Denno, went through a number of drummers before hooking up with Darren Zentek in time to record their 1st LP, ''Situation At Hand''. This lineup continued to tour and record for 5 years, releasing the LPs ''Came By To Kill Me'' in 1996 and ''At Zero'' in 1998, both of which appeared on the Slowdime Records label (in conjunction with Dischord Records Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.–based independent record label specializing in punk rock. Vic Bondi is an American singer-songwriter and one of the founding members of political Chicago hardcore punk band Articles of Faith. He went on to form Alloy, and Jones Very after AoF's demise. At the time of AoF's original breakup Bondi was working as a history instructor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Bondi's subsequent day jobs included working on Microsoft's Encarta as well as other projects in educational and media software. Office of Future Plans was a music project that was started in 2009 by J. Robbins, the former bassist of Government Issue and frontman/guitarist of Jawbox, Burning Airlines and Channels. Other members are the guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, bassist Brooks Harlan and the drummer Darren Zentek (formerly of Kerosene 454 and also a member of Channels). They were signed to Dischord Records Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.–based independent record label specializing in punk rock. DeSoto Records
DeSoto Records is an American record label based in Washington, D.C. History DeSoto was founded in 1989 and is run by husband and wife team Bill Barbot and Kim Coletta (both formerly of the band Jawbox). It was first founded by members of the band Edsel to release their first single: "My Manacles." Jawbox was next to use the name DeSoto for their first EP. DeSoto has released over 40 records, 7" singles, CDs, and LP vinyl records. It is distributed by Fontana Distribution. The label decided in 2002 to stop releasing new music and focus instead on its catalog. They partnered with Dischord Records to re-release some of Jawbox's records.
