Chancellor Peak
Chancellor Peak is a mountain summit located in Yoho National Park, in the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, Canada. Its nearest higher peak is Mount Vaux, to the north-northwest. Both are part of the Ottertail Range. Chancellor Peak is a landmark in the Kicking Horse River valley and can be seen from the Trans-Canada Highway midway between Golden and Field. History The mountain was named in 1898 to honor Sir John Alexander Boyd (1837–1916), who was Chancellor of the High Court of Justice of the Province of Ontario. The first ascent of Chancellor Peak was made on July 30, 1901 by James Outram, J. Henry Scattergood, and George M. Weed, with Christian Hasler Sr. as guide. Canadian Rockies
The Canadian Rockies (french: Rocheuses canadiennes) or Canadian Rocky Mountains, comprising both the Alberta Rockies and the British Columbian Rockies, is the Canadian segment of the North American Rocky Mountains. It is the easternmost part of the Canadian Cordillera, which is the northern segment of the North American Cordillera, the expansive system of interconnected mountain ranges between the Interior Plains and the Pacific Coast that runs northwest–southeast from central Alaska to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. John Alexander Boyd
Sir John Alexander Boyd (April 23, 1837November 23, 1916) was a Canadian lawyer and judge. John Alexander Boyd was born in Toronto on April 23, 1837. Educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto, Boyd began his career in 1860 when he was articled to David Breakenridge Read. Boyd was Chancellor of the High Court of Justice of the Province of Ontario, the last chancellor before common law and equity were fused in the province. His term as chancellor began on May 3, 1881. Boyd wrote the trial decision in '' St Catharines Milling and Lumber Co v R'', in which he ruled for Ontario, rejecting the concept of Aboriginal title. In his decision, Boyd denigrated Indigenous peoples in Canada and endorsed racist views about them. Mount Goodsir
Mount Goodsir (or the Goodsir Towers) is the highest mountain in the Ottertail Range, a subrange of the Park Ranges in British Columbia. It is located in Yoho National Park, near its border with Kootenay National Park. The mountain has two major summits, the South Tower (the higher summit) and the North Tower, . The mountain was named by James Hector in 1859 after two brothers, John Goodsir, a professor of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, and Harry Goodsir, a surgeon on the ship HMS Erebus. The standard route on the South Tower is the southwest ridge, a straightforward but long climb ( Grade III), which consists primarily of non-technical terrain, but includes short sections of narrow ridge graded YDS 5.4. Mount Hurd
Mount Hurd is a mountain in the Ottertail Range of the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia, Canada. It was named after Major Marshall Farnam Hurd (1823-1903) a Canadian Pacific Railway engineer and explorer. It was featured on a 1928 Canada Post 10¢ stamp based on a painting by Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith. __NOTOC__ Climate Based on the Köppen climate classification, Mount Hurd is located in a subarctic climate with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers. Surface runoff (also known as overland flow) is the flow of water occurring on the ground surface when excess rainwater, stormwater, meltwater, or other sources, can no longer sufficiently rapidly infiltrate in the soil. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Laramide Orogeny
The Laramide orogeny was a time period of mountain building in western North America, which started in the Late Cretaceous, 70 to 80 million years ago, and ended 35 to 55 million years ago. The exact duration and ages of beginning and end of the orogeny are in dispute. The Laramide orogeny occurred in a series of pulses, with quiescent phases intervening. The major feature that was created by this orogeny was deep-seated, thick-skinned deformation, with evidence of this orogeny found from Canada to northern Mexico, with the easternmost extent of the mountain-building represented by the Black Hills of South Dakota.
