Central Group is a Thai multinational conglomerate founded by Tiang and Samrit Chirathivat in 1947, and still privately owned by the Chirathivat family . Its publicly-traded subsidiaries include Central Retail, Central Pattana (commercial real estate development), and Central Plaza Hotel (hospitality group and restaurant operator). Its privately-held subsidiaries operate several European department stores, including those acquired from the former KaDeWe Group and Selfridges Group, and financial services. Chao Phraya River
The Chao Phraya River is the major river in Thailand, with its low alluvial plain forming the centre of the country. It flows through Bangkok and then into the Gulf of Thailand. Etymology Written evidence of the river being referred to by the name ''Chao Phraya'' dates only to the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV, 1850–1868). It is unknown what name, if any at all, was used for the river in older times. Thon Buri District
Thon Buri (, ) is one of the 50 districts (''khet'') of Bangkok, Thailand. On the west bank of Chao Phraya River, it was once part of Thon Buri province. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) Bangkok Yai, Phra Nakhon (across Chao Phraya River), Khlong San, Bang Kho Laem (across Chao Phraya), Rat Burana, Chom Thong, and Phasi Charoen. Selfridges Group
Selfridges Group is a holding company of European department stores, itself owned by the Thai conglomerate Central Group and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. It operates the full-line stores Arnotts and Brown Thomas in Ireland, De Bijenkorf in the Netherlands, and Selfridges in the United Kingdom. Chirathivat Family
The Chirathivat family (, ) is a Thai family of Chinese descent. The family was headed by Tiang Chirathivat (; 1905–1968), who migrated to Siam from Hainan and settled in Bangkok in 1927. Tiang's original Chinese surname was Cheng. He had 26 children with three wives that resulted in roughly 220 descendants today. Fifty-one are currently involved in the business.
