Caulfield Sprint
The Caulfield Sprint is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race held under open handicap conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1000 metres, held at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in October. Total prize money for the race is A$300,000. History The event is scheduled on the third day of the MRC Spring Carnival (Caulfield Cup Day). After the champion sprinter Schillaci won this race in 1994, the following year the race was renamed after the thoroughbred to the Schillaci Stakes. The race was run from 1995 to 1999 under the new name but the following year the Victoria Amateur Turf Club made a decision to rename the Chirnside Stakes to the Schillaci Stakes. This event was run as the Mercedes-Benz Sprint in 2000. Caulfield Racecourse
Caulfield Racecourse Reserve is located nine kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, on the boundary of Caulfield and Caulfield East in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. Caulfield Cup
The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under handicap conditions, although the Melbourne Racing Club is in the process of turning the race into weight for age (WFA) conditions. This is for all horses aged three years old and older. It takes place over a distance of 2400 metres at the Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in mid October. The prize money is A$5,000,000. Sepoy (foaled 27 September 2008) is a multiple Group One winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse who is most notable for winning the 2011 Golden Slipper. Background Sepoy is a home-bred horse of Darley Stud by world record-breaking stallion Elusive Quality out of the Danehill mare Watchful. Watchful is the full sister to Camarena, winner of the Group One Queensland Derby who in turn is the dam of Sires' Produce. Racing career Sepoy became the first horse since Rancher (1982) and Bel Esprit (2002) to win all three legs of the Blue Diamond series as a two-year-old. Victoria Amateur Turf Club
The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) is one of three metropolitan horse racing clubs in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It began life as the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, in 1875 with Mr. E.C. Moore as the club's first Secretary. The Dowling Forest Racecourse in Ballarat was the location for the first VATC race meeting on Friday, 24 March 1876. Within six months the VATC were granted use of Crown land at Caulfield as a permanent home in Melbourne. History and race meetings In 1879, the club staged the first running of the Caulfield Cup, and two years later, introduced the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap. Schillaci (horse)
Schillaci (1988–2001) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was an eight-time Group One winner. He was by Salieri (USA) out of Biscarina (Biscay-Forina). Background A huge grey gelding, Schillaci was a $70,000 purchase at the 1990 yearling sales, and was named after Salvatore Schillaci, who was the leading goal scorer at the 1990 World Cup. In something of a fashion at the time, another grey gelding, Baggio, was named after one of Schillaci's teammates, Roberto Baggio, and was a consistent stakes performer in Brisbane. Racing career Schillaci was unraced at two, and made his debut in a Kyneton maiden on 22 October 1991, where he defeated Mavournae, who, like Schillaci, would go on to win the Rubiton Stakes.
