Cathiravelu Ponnambalam
C. Ponnambalam (Cathiravelu Ponnambalam) was the First Mayor of Jaffna. Biography Ponnambalam hailed from a distinguished Tamil family from Jaffna. His father Arumugam Cathiravelu was a Magistrate and District Judge. His own brother Cathiravelu Sittampalam was the first Cabinet Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in the independent Sri Lanka. His uncle Arumugam Canagaratnam was the Chairman of the first Urban Council of Jaffna and built and founded Canagaratnam Maha Vidyalayam. Ponnambalam's grand uncle Viswanather Casipillai was a Crown Proctor and co-founder of the Jaffna Hindu College. His brother-in-law C. Casipillai was the Third Mayor of Jaffna. Viswanather Casipillai was a The Crown, Crown Proctor and co-founder of the Jaffna Hindu College. Biography His grand nephew Cathiravelu Sittampalam was the first Cabinet Minister of Mail, Posts and Telecommunications in the independent Sri Lanka. Viswanather Casipillai was born to a distinguished Tamil Family whose ancestry can be traced to the ancient Royal Kuriyans, highly respected noblemen of the king’s Court of the Tamil Kingdom of Nallur. Two descendants of these noblemen, Vanniyasingam Kuriyan and Canagasekara Kothanda Kuriyan, lived in Jaffna later during the Dutch regime. Jaffna Hindu College ( ta, யாழ்ப்பாணம் இந்துக் கல்லூரி, translit=Yāḻppāṇam Intuk Kallūri; si, යාපනය හින්දු විද්යාලය, translit=Yāpanaya Hindu Vidyālaya; abbreviated as JHC) is a national school in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1886 by a group of Hindu people who wanted an English language alternative to the Christian missionary schools. Jaffna (, ) is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jaffna District located on a peninsula of the same name. Arumugam Canagaratnam ( ta, ஆறுமுகம் கனகரத்தினம்; 1873–1929) was a Ceylon Tamil lawyer and member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon. Early life and family Canagaratnam was born in 1873. He was the son of Visuvanathan Arumugam. Canagaratnam was educated at Jaffna Central College and Wesley College, Colombo. He had his higher education in Calcutta. Canagaratnam's nephew C.
