Jaffna Hindu College ( ta, யாழ்ப்பாணம் இந்துக் கல்லூரி, translit=Yāḻppāṇam Intuk Kallūri; si, යාපනය හින්දු විද්‍යාලය, translit=Yāpanaya Hindu Vidyālaya; abbreviated as JHC) is a national school in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1886 by a group of Hindu people who wanted an English language alternative to the Christian missionary schools. History In the late 19th century all the English language schools in the area were run by Christian missionaries. In 1886, Williams Nevins Muthukumaru Sithamparapillai founded ''The Native Town High School''. The school encountered financial problems and in 1889 it was taken over by S. Jaffna (, ) is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jaffna District located on a peninsula of the same name. With a population of 88,138 in 2012, Jaffna is Sri Lanka's 12th most populous city. Jaffna is approximately from Kandarodai which served as an emporium in the Jaffna peninsula from classical antiquity. Jaffna's suburb Nallur served as the capital of the four-century-long medieval Jaffna Kingdom. Prior to the Sri Lankan Civil War, it was Sri Lanka's second most populous city after Colombo. Nevins Selvadurai
Nevins Selvadurai ( ta, நெவின்ஸ் செல்வதுரை; 15 October 1863 – 28 April 1938) was a Ceylon Tamil teacher, principal of Jaffna Hindu College and a member of the State Council of Ceylon. Early life and family Selvadurai was born on 15 October 1863. He was the son of William Nevins Sithamaparapillai, headmaster of Jaffna Wesleyan Central School (present day Jaffna Central College). He was educated at Vaddukoddai Primary School and Jaffna Wesleyan Central School. Aged 15 he joined Presidency College in Madras, from where graduated in science with honours. Selvadurai married Margaret Annie Papapammah, daughter of Muutusamy Watson, in 1889. They had several children. Career After graduating Selvadurai became a teacher at Jaffna Wesleyan Central School. Zahira College (commonly known as Zahira) ( si, සහිරා විදුහල, ta, சாஹிரா கல்லுரி) is an Islamic school at Colombo in Maradana, Sri Lanka. The Senate was the upper chamber of the parliament of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Commission. The Senate was appointed and indirectly elected rather than directly elected. It was housed in the old Legislative Council building in Colombo Fort and met for the first time on 12 November 1947. Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah is a Tamil Australian engineer, academic and head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales. Early life Ambikairajah was educated at Jaffna Hindu College between 1959 and 1969.
