Catanduanes (; ), officially the Province of Catanduanes, is an island province located in the Bicol Region of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the 12th-largest island in the Philippines, and lies to the east of Camarines Sur, across Maqueda Channel. Its capital is Virac. It had a population of 271,879 people as of the 2020 census. The province comprises Catanduanes Island (also called ''Virac Island''), Panay Island, Lete Island, the Palumbanes group of islands (Porongpong, Tignob and Calabagio), and a few other small, surrounding islets and rocks. The province is also home to various mollusk fossil sites, notably the second-oldest ammonite site in the Philippines. These sites have certain species of ammonites that are found nowhere else in Southeast Asia. Catanduanes Provincial Board
The Catanduanes Provincial Board is the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial legislature) of the Philippine province of Catanduanes. The members are elected via plurality-at-large voting: the province is divided into two districts, each having four seats. A voter votes up to four names, with the top four candidates per district being elected. The vice governor is the ''ex officio'' presiding officer, and only votes to break ties. The vice governor is elected via the plurality voting system province-wide. The districts used in appropriation of members is not coextensive with the legislative district of Catanduanes; unlike congressional representation which is at-large, Catanduanes is divided into two districts for representation in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. Gigmoto, officially the Municipality of Gigmoto, is a 5th class municipality in the province of Catanduanes, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 8,712 people. History The name "Gigmoto" originated from the Bicol word ''himbot'' that means “just in time”. This is supposedly related to the romantic venture of a young man from Baras seeking to court a maiden from the town of Viga. Competing with several other suitors, the man traveled northbound to win the love of the maiden. He was overtaken by the night, so he slept in that place. In the morning he proceeded to Viga, arriving there just before nightfall. After staying for a period of time in Viga, the man from Baras won the heart of the woman. Baras, Catanduanes
Baras, officially the Municipality of Baras, is a 5th class municipality in the province of Catanduanes, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 13,484 people. Etymology The name is derived from the "badas" plant, once abundant in this location. Yet, what kind of vegetation "badas" is, is a subject of conjecture. Some believed that it was a kind of bamboo, now called "bagacay". Others believed it to be some sturdy tree, but the majority believed that it is a wild rattan plant abounding in the surrounding mountains. Nevertheless, one common belief is the fact that this "badas" was a source of materials for making spears, a weapon used by the natives to repel the raiders and pirates.
