Carroll, Iowa
Carroll is a city in, and the county seat of, Carroll County, Iowa, United States, along the Middle Raccoon River. The population was 10,321 in the 2020 census. History Carroll was laid out in 1867. It took its name from Carroll County, which was named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland. He was the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence. In 1869, the centrally located railroad town of Carroll City was selected as the county seat, replacing, with some protest, Carrollton. Later a $4,000 courthouse was constructed on the town square. This building was used until it burned to the ground in 1886. The vaults and records were undamaged, however, and moved to temporary housing in the Joyce Building and Drees' Music Hall. The following winter a $40,000 bond issue was approved toward the construction of a new, permanent courthouse. Mary Arnold (singer)
Mary Margaret Arnold (born September 19, 1947 in Carroll, Iowa) is an American singer. She performed with the rock group Kenny Rogers and The First Edition from 1968 to 1976. While at Drake University, Arnold had her own TV show. While studying at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, Arnold auditioned for the show choir The Young Americans. She took a year off of school and toured with the group, meeting fellow singer Kenny Rogers. Her roommate was singer Thelma Camacho, who sang with Rogers in the band The First Edition. After Camacho was dismissed from the band, Arnold took her spot in the band, beating out Karen Carpenter for the role. She stayed with the band until it disbanded in 1976. After the two were introduced by Rogers, Arnold married singer Roger Miller. After The First Edition disbanded, Mary toured and recorded with Roger until his death in 1992. Kuemper Catholic School System is a private, Roman Catholic PK-12 school in Carroll, Iowa. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City. It includes the elementary/middle school division and Kuemper Catholic High School, held in four buildings. History The roots of Kuemper Catholic School go all the way back to 1874 with the Mt. Carmel parish began a small pioneering Catholic school. By 1916, each of the 12 area parishes surrounding Carroll built their own Catholic grade school, and eventually Catholic high schools were also established in Breda, Mt. Carmel, Templeton, and Vail.
