Carol Seajay
Carol Seajay is an American activist and former bookseller. She cofounded the Old Wives Tales bookstore in San Francisco as well as the ''Feminist Bookstore News'', which she edited and published for more than 20 years before ceasing publication in 2000. Early life Seajay attended higher education at the University of Michigan. During her last year in school she worked as an abortion counselor, but was fired after being outed as a lesbian, leading her to purchase a motorcycle on which she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1974. Activity in the Bay Area Upon arriving in San Francisco, Seajay attended classes at a free school in the area. She also joined a local feminist worker cooperative bookstore (the Full Moon Cafe and Bookstore), but it was eventually shut down because of unlicensed events. ''Feminist Bookstore News'' (''FBN'') was a trade publication for feminist bookstores. It was active from 1976 until 2000, and issues were published sometimes bimonthly and sometimes quarterly. The publication was described by Tee Corinne as "the glue that kept women booksellers around the world together", acting as a network for feminist booksellers and publishers across the United States and transnationally. History ''Feminist Bookstore News'' was founded by Carol Seajay after the First National Women in Print Conference, intended to help the community that had attended stay in touch with each other. The five largest feminist bookstores donated $100 each ($ in ) to help start the publication. The first issue was published on October 14, 1976. First National Women In Print Conference
The Women in Print Conference (also the National Women in Print Conference) was a conference of feminist women involved in publishing, including workers from feminist bookstores, in the United States. It was conceptualized by June Arnold and involved networking and workshops. The conference was held three times: in 1976, 1981 and 1985. Conferences The first Women in Print Conference was held at a Camp Fire Girls campsite in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1976, running from August 29 to September 5 with 132 women attending and representing 80 organizations. The preparation for it was initiated by novelist and publisher June Arnold, and the attendees came from across the United States. Old Wives Tales (bookstore)
Old Wives Tales (also Old Wives' Tales) was a feminist bookstore in the Mission Dolores neighborhood of San Francisco. It was founded on October 31, 1976 by Carol Seajay and Paula Wallace, a lesbian couple. It closed permanently in October 1995. History On October 31, 1976, Old Wives Tales opened at 532 Valencia Street, funded by a loan from the San Francisco Feminist Federal Credit Union. It initially operated as a partnership between the founders. In 1978, Carol Seajay and Paula Wallace broke up, with Wallace moving away. The bookstore was moved to a new location at 1009 Valencia Street after the breakup, and Seajay restructured it to run as a worker cooperative.
