Carlton is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 948 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Carlton County. The town sits on the northwestern edge of Jay Cooke State Park. Minnesota State Highways 45 and 210 and County Roads 1 and 3 are four of Carlton's main routes. It is five miles south of Cloquet and 21 miles southwest of Duluth. History In 1870, the Northern Pacific Railroad finished a stretch of track that linked Duluth to St. Paul. Carlton Independent School District 93, also known as Carlton School District or Carlton Public Schools, is a school district headquartered in Carlton, Minnesota. It operates two schools: South Terrace Elementary School (PK-5) and Carlton High School (6-12). Entirely in Carlton County, it serves most of Carlton, much of Big Lake, and a small section of Cloquet. History The District #15 district was created on a date prior to February 2, 1913, and merged with Wrenshall at around this time period. Circa 1951 it became District #2 as it merged with the Sawyer district. It received its current formal name circa 1957. In 2019 the Carlton district and the Wrenshall School District were in talks on the possibility of consolidating. The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is a voluntary, non-profit association for the support and governance of interscholastic activities at high schools in Minnesota, United States. The association supports interscholastic athletics and fine arts programs for member schools. Membership includes nearly 500 schools, including special schools, home schools, and 435 high schools.
