Carlton Independent School District 93, also known as Carlton School District or Carlton Public Schools, is a school district headquartered in Carlton, Minnesota. It operates two schools: South Terrace Elementary School (PK-5) and Carlton High School (6-12). Entirely in Carlton County, it serves most of Carlton, much of Big Lake, and a small section of Cloquet. History The District #15 district was created on a date prior to February 2, 1913, and merged with Wrenshall at around this time period. Circa 1951 it became District #2 as it merged with the Sawyer district. It received its current formal name circa 1957. In 2019 the Carlton district and the Wrenshall School District were in talks on the possibility of consolidating. By September 2020 a study was released stating that if Carlton and Wrenshall consolidated, the taxpayer in the former Carlton zone would pay two and one half times the rate that a Wrenshall zone taxpayer would. Carlton, Minnesota
Carlton is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 948 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Carlton County. The town sits on the northwestern edge of Jay Cooke State Park. Minnesota State Highways 45 and 210 and County Roads 1 and 3 are four of Carlton's main routes. It is five miles south of Cloquet and 21 miles southwest of Duluth. History In 1870, the Northern Pacific Railroad finished a stretch of track that linked Duluth to St. Paul. Carlton High School is a public high school located in Carlton, Minnesota, United States. The school operates under the Carlton Public School District, housing grades 6 through 12. It serves a population of approximately 350 students. Cloquet ( ) is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States, at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota State Highway 33. Part of the city lies within the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation and serves as one of the reservation's three administrative centers. The population was 12,568 at the 2020 census. History Cloquet began as a group of small settlements around three sawmills: Shaw Town, Nelson Town, and Johnson Town. These became known as Knife Falls after a local waterfall over sharp slate rocks, and later as Cloquet. The Ojibwe in the area called the area ''Mookomaan-onigamiing'', meaning "At the Knife Portage", as the portage to avoid Knife Falls connected the three communities. Wrenshall School District, ISD #100 is a school district headquartered in Wrenshall, Minnesota. It is entirely in Carlton County. It is divided into elementary and secondary divisions. History In 2019 the Wrenshall district and the Carlton School District were in talks on the possibility of consolidating. By September 2020 a study was released stating that if Carlton and Wrenshall consolidated, the taxpayer in the former Carlton zone would pay two and one half times the rate that a Wrenshall zone taxpayer would. Some legislation that would have facilitated the merger was, in 2020, not passed by the Minnesota Legislature. Additionally the compositions of the school boards changed. The two school boards chose not to hold further discussions on consolidation after February 2021.
