Carl Julius Evensen
Carl Julius Evensen (3 December 1851 – 3 October 1937) was a Norwegian shipmaster and explorer. Cape Evensen on the northwest coast of Antarctica and Evensen Nunatak, off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, were named in his honor. Biography He was born at Drøbak in Akershus, Norway. He was a ship captain and resided in between Oslo and Sandefjord. He explored the Antarctic together with Carl Anton Larsen among others, and in 1893 he reached the Antarctic Peninsula on board the barque ''Hertha''. Personal life Carl Julius Evensen was married to Severine Marie Jensen in 1879. Carl and Severine had eight children in all, most emigrated to the United States. He died at Brooklyn, New York. Hertha Nunatak () is a nunatak northwest of Castor Nunatak in the Seal Nunataks group, off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was first seen and mapped as an island in December 1893 by Captain Carl Anton Larsen, who named it after the ''Hertha'', a ship which combined sealing and exploring activities along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula under Captain Carl Julius Evensen in 1893–94. Cape Evensen
Cape Evensen is a cape forming the north side of the entrance to Auvert Bay, on the northwest coast of Stresher Peninsula, Graham Land in Antarctica. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05, and named by Jean-Baptiste Charcot for Captain C.J. Evensen of the ''Hertha'', who explored along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula in 1893. Exploration refers to the historical practice of discovering remote lands. It is studied by geographers and historians. Two major eras of exploration occurred in human history: one of convergence, and one of divergence. The first, covering most of ''Homo sapiens'' history, saw humans moving out of Africa, settling in new lands, and developing distinct cultures in relative isolation. Carl Anton Larsen
Carl Anton Larsen (7 August 1860 – 8 December 1924) was a Norway, Norwegian-born Whaling, whaler and Antarctic explorer who made important contributions to the exploration of Antarctica, the most significant being the first discovery of fossils for which he received the Back Grant from the Royal Geographical Society. In December 1893 he became the first person to ski in Antarctica on the Larsen Ice Shelf which was subsequently named after him. In 1904, Larsen re-founded a whaling settlement at Grytviken on the island of South Georgia Island, South Georgia. In 1910, after some years' residence on South Georgia, he renounced his Norwegian citizenship and took British citizenship. The Norwegian whale factory ship was named after him.
