Captain Fathom
''Captain Fathom'' is an animated television series produced in 1965 by Cambria Studios. Like Cambria's other productions, ''Clutch Cargo'' and ''Space Angel'', it was produced in Synchro-Vox. At least 26 30-minute episodes, all in color, were filmed. The episodes could be broken down into five 5-minute segments in cliffhanger format. Renowned comic book artist Alex Toth was the director. This animated series was broadcast in Italy in syndication in the early 1980s under two different titles: ''Avventure negli abissi'' (that means in English ''Adventures in the Abyss'') and ''Captain Fathom''. This was the last Cambria Studios cartoon show to use the Syncro-Vox. An attempt at airing a live-action version of Captain Fathom was done in 1955 starring Don Megowan, Richard H. Cambria Studios
Cambria Productions was the West Hollywood, California animation production studio most famous for its wide usage of the Syncro-Vox technique of animation developed by Edwin Gillette, who was a co-partner in the studio. Owned by Clark S. Haas, Jr. from 1957 until 1965, the studio produced ''Clutch Cargo'' (1959-1960), '' Space Angel'' (1962), '' Captain Fathom'' (1965), and ''The New 3 Stooges'' (1965-1966). A test film for another series, '' Doc Potts'' or ''Doc Potts and Weselly'', was prepared in 1960, though the series was apparently never produced. Two sample episodes of a proposed Moon Mullins series were produced along with a sales film to promote it to local television stations, but it didn't clear enough markets to go into production. ''Clutch Cargo'' is an American animated television series created by cartoonist Clark Haas and produced by Cambria Productions, and syndicated beginning on March 9, 1959. The series was notable for its limited animation yet imaginative stories, as well as for being the first widely-known use of Syncro-Vox technology. Plot The series' stories centered on adventurer Clutch Cargo, who was sent around the world on dangerous assignments. Space Angel
''Space Angel'' is an animated science fiction television series produced in the United States from early 1962 through 1964. It used the same Synchro-Vox lip technique as ''Clutch Cargo'', the first cartoon produced by the same studio, Cambria Productions. The show was created by Dick Darley, who also created the 1950-1955 live-action series '' Space Patrol''. Synchro-Vox
Syncro-Vox (sometimes spelled Synchro-Vox) is a filming method that combines static images with moving images, the most common use of which is to superimpose talking lips on a photograph of a celebrity or a cartoon drawing. It is one of the most extreme examples of the cost-cutting strategy of limited animation. The method was developed by cameraman Edwin "Ted" Gillette in the 1950s in order to simulate talking animals in television commercials. Gillette filed the technique on February 4, 1952, and obtained patent #2,739,505 on March 27, 1956. Because animating a mouth in synchronization with sound was difficult, Syncro-Vox was soon used as a cheap animation technique. Alex Toth
Alexander Toth (June 25, 1928 – May 27, 2006) was an American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s. Toth's work began in the American comic book industry, but he is also known for his animation designs for Hanna-Barbera throughout the 1960s and 1970s. His work included ''Super Friends'', ''Fantastic Four (1967 TV series), Fantastic Four'', ''Space Ghost (TV series), Space Ghost'', ''Sealab 2020'', ''The Herculoids'' and ''Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, Birdman''. Don Markstein's Toonopedia
Don Markstein's Toonopedia (subtitled A Vast Repository of Toonological Knowledge) is an online encyclopedia of print cartoons, comic strips and animation, initiated February 13, 2001. Donald D. Markstein, the sole writer and editor of Toonopedia, termed it "the world's first hypertext encyclopedia of toons" and stated, "The basic idea is to cover the entire spectrum of American cartoonery." Markstein began the project during 1999 with several earlier titles: he changed Don's Cartoon Encyberpedia (1999) to Don Markstein's Cartoonopedia (2000) after learning the word "Encyberpedia" had been trademarked. During 2001, he settled on his final title, noting, "Decided (after thinking about it for several weeks) to change the name of the site to Don Markstein's Toonopedia, rather than Cartoonopedia.
