Canis Lycanoides
''Xenocyon'' ("strange dog") is an extinct subgenus of ''Canis''. The group includes ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''africanus'', ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''antonii'' and ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''falconeri'' that gave rise to ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''lycanoides''. The hypercarnivorous ''Xenocyon'' gave rise to the modern dhole and the African wild dog. Taxonomy ''Xenocyon'' is proposed as a subgenus of ''Canis'' named ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon''). One taxonomic authority proposes that as part of this subgenus, the group named ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ex gr. ''falconeri'' (ex gr. meaning "of the group including") would include all of the large hypercarnivorous canids that inhabited the Old World during the Late Pliocene–Early Pleistocene: ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''africanus'' in Africa, ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''antonii'' in Asia and ''Canis'' (''Xenocyon'') ''falconeri'' in Europe. Further, these three could be regarded as extreme geographical variations within the one taxon. Thi ...

Henan
Henan (; or ; ; alternatively Honan) is a landlocked province of China, in the central part of the country. Henan is often referred to as Zhongyuan or Zhongzhou (), which literally means "central plain" or "midland", although the name is also applied to the entirety of China proper. Henan is a birthplace of Han Chinese civilization, with over 3,200 years of recorded history and remained China's cultural, economic and political center until approximately 1,000 years ago. Henan Province is home to many heritage sites, including the ruins of Shang dynasty capital city Yin and the Shaolin Temple. Four of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China, Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng and Zhengzhou, are in Henan. The practice of tai chi also began here in Chen Jia Gou Village (Chen style), as did the later Yang and Wu styles. Although the name of the province () means "south of the ellowriver.", approximately a quarter of the province lies north of the Yellow River, also known as the Hu ...

Canis Mosbachensis
''Canis mosbachensis'', sometimes known as the Mosbach wolf, is an extinct small wolf that once inhabited Eurasia from the Middle Pleistocene era to the Late Pleistocene. It is widely accepted as the ancestor of ''Canis lupus'', the grey wolf. Taxonomy The holotype of the Mosbach wolf ''Canis mosbachensis'' Soergel, 1925 was found in Jockgrim, Germany. In 2010, a study found that the diversity of the ''Canis'' group decreased by the end of the Early Pleistocene to Middle Pleistocene and was limited in Eurasia to two types of wolves. These were the small wolves of the ''C. mosbachensis–C. variabilis'' group that were a comparable size to the extant Indian wolf ''(Canis lupus pallipes)'', and the large hypercarnivorous ''Canis (Xenocyon) lycaonoides'' that was comparable in size to extant northern grey wolves. The Mosbach wolf occurred in time between ''C. etruscus'' in the Early Pleistocene and the modern ''C. lupus''. The Mosbach wolf was smaller than most North American wolf ...

Middle Pleistocene
The Chibanian, widely known by its previous designation of Middle Pleistocene, is an age in the international geologic timescale or a stage in chronostratigraphy, being a division of the Pleistocene Epoch within the ongoing Quaternary Period. The Chibanian name was officially ratified in January 2020. It is currently estimated to span the time between 0.770 Ma (770,000 years ago) and 0.126 Ma (126,000 years ago), also expressed as 770–126 ka. It includes the transition in palaeoanthropology from the Lower to the Middle Palaeolithic over 300 ka. The Chibanian is preceded by the Calabrian and succeeded by the proposed Tarantian. The beginning of the Chibanian is the Brunhes–Matuyama reversal, when the Earth's magnetic field last underwent reversal. It ends with the onset of the Eemian interglacial period (Marine Isotope Stage 5). The term Middle Pleistocene was in use as a provisional or "quasi-formal" designation by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). W ...

Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major
Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major (15 August 1843, Glasgow – 25 March 1923, Munich) was a Scottish-born, Swiss physician, zoologist and vertebrate palaeontologist. Major was born in Glasgow and studied at Basel and Zurich Universities in Switzerland and later Göttingen in Germany. He graduated in medicine at Basel in 1868 and became a physician in Florence, Italy. Like many early naturalists he spent his free time studying fossil mammals. His first publication was on fossil primates in 1872. The Italian government supported him in 1877 and he collected fossils from Calabria, Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily. In 1886, he stopped practising as a physician and began to study fossils in the Greek Archipelago with his collections going to the College Galliard at Lausanne and to the British Museum (Natural History). In the British Museum collections he took a keen interest in material from Madagascar. He studied the lemur fauna, both extant and extinct, discovered the new family Megaladap ...
