Canada–Morocco relations are foreign relations between Canada and Morocco. Both countries established diplomatic relations in 1956. Canada has an embassy in Rabat. Morocco has an embassy in Ottawa and a general consulate in Montreal. Both countries are full members of the Francophonie. There are 100,000 people of Moroccan descent living in Canada. Morocco (),, ) officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is the westernmost country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Rabat
Rabat (, also , ; ar, الرِّبَاط, er-Ribât; ber, ⵕⵕⴱⴰⵟ, ṛṛbaṭ) is the capital city of Morocco and the country's seventh largest city with an urban population of approximately 580,000 (2014) and a metropolitan population of over 1.2 million. It is also the capital city of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra administrative region. Rabat is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg, opposite Salé, the city's main commuter town. Rabat was founded in the 12th century by Almohads. The city steadily grew but went into an extended period of decline following the collapse of the Almohads. Francophonie is the quality of speaking French. The term designates the ensemble of people, organisations and governments that share the use of French on a daily basis and as administrative language, teaching language or chosen language. The term was coined by Onésime Reclus in 1880 and became important as part of the conceptual rethinking of cultures and geography in the late 20th century. Denominations Francophonie, francophonie and francophone space are syntagmatic. Moroccan Canadian
Moroccan Canadians are Canadians of full or partial Moroccan descent, as well as people from the state of Morocco who are ethno-linguistic and religious minorities. According to the 2011 Census, there were 71,910 Canadians who claimed full or partial Moroccan ancestry, an increase compared to the 2006 Census. A large minority of Moroccan Canadians, comprising 27,000 people, are Moroccan Jews. History Moroccans began arriving in Canada in the mid-1960s in search of employment and a new life.
