Calyptraeidae
The Calyptraeidae are a family of small to medium-sized marine prosobranch gastropods. MolluscaBase. Calyptraeidae Lamarck, 1809. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=141 on 2019-11-04 This family includes the slipper snails (''Crepidula'' species), the Chinese hat snails, (''Calyptraea'' species), and the cup-and-saucer snails (''Crucibulum'' species) among others. The Calyptraeidae are the only family in the superfamily Calyptraeoidea. This family has no subfamilies according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005. ''Crepidula fornicata'' was brought to Europe on imported American oysters in the late 19th century and is now considered a significant pest in European oyster beds. Description Internally, the shell is distinguished by a shelf-like, cup-like, or half-cup-like structure used for muscle attachment. Some calyptraeids have shells that externally resemble those of limpet ...

Crepidula
''Crepidula'', commonly known as the slipper snails, slipper limpets, or slipper shells, is a genus of sea snails, marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusks in the family Calyptraeidae. This family includes the slipper snails (''Crepidula''), hat snails (''Calyptraea''), spiny slipper snails (''Bostrycapulus''), and cup-and-saucer snails (''Crucibulum (gastropod), Crucibulum'') as well as ''Crepipatella'', ''Siphopatella'', ''Grandicrepidula'', and ''Maoricrypta''.Bouchet, P.; Gofas, S. (2011). Crepidula Lamarck, 1799. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=137722 on 2011-05-21 These recent changes in the definition of ''Crepidula'' are based on both DNA sequence data as well as anatomical work. Dissections of various calyptraeids show that species that are now placed in ''Grandicrepidula'' and ''Maoricrypta'' are anatomically very different from the true ''Crepidula''. If only the shells are examined this di ...

Crepipatella
''Crepipatella'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Calyptraeidae, the slipper snails and cup-and-saucer snails. MolluscaBase eds. (2020). MolluscaBase. Crepipatella Lesson, 1831. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=234136 on 2020-09-26 The snails in this genus were formerly all thought to belong to the genus ''Crepidula'', but DNA sequence data show that they are a separate genus. A recent revision of the South American species has led to some significant taxonomic changes, as well as the addition of a new species - Crepipatella occulta Veliz et al. 2012. Species Species within the genus ''Crepipatella'' include: * ''Crepipatella capensis'' (Quoy and Gaimard, 1832–33) This species is known from the upwelling area of South Africa around Cape Town. These animals have direct development where embryonic nutrition is provided by nurse embryos (termed adelphophagy). ''C. c ...

Bostrycapulus
''Bostrycapulus'', commonly known as the spiny slipper snails, is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Calyptraeidae, the slipper snails, cup-and-saucer snails and hat snails. Before 2005, the snails in this genus were all thought to belong to one species, which was known as ''Crepidula aculeata'', the spiny slipper snail.Collin R. (2005). "Development, phylogeny, and taxonomy of'' Bostrycapulus'' (Caenogastropoda: Calyptraeidae), an ancient cryptic radiation". ''Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society'' 144(1): 75-101. . However, morphological and DNA sequence data show that the spiny slipper snails are a monophyletic group that is more closely related to ''Crepipatella'' than it is to ''Crepidula''. Taxonomy Taxonomic history All of the species within the genus'' Bostrycapulus'' were previously assigned to a single species, ''Crepidula aculeata''. However, molecular phylogenetic and anatomical work have shown them to be a separate monophyleti ...

Crepidula Fornicata
''Crepidula fornicata'' is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Calyptraeidae, the slipper snails and cup and saucer snails. It has many common names, including common slipper shell, common Atlantic slippersnail, boat shell, quarterdeck shell, fornicating slipper snail, Atlantic slipper limpet and it is in Britain as the "common slipper limpet". Description The size of the shell is 20–50 mm. The maximum recorded shell length is 56 mm.Welch J. J. (2010). "The "Island Rule" and Deep-Sea Gastropods: Re-Examining the Evidence". '' PLoS ONE'' 5(1): e8776. . This sea snail has an arched, rounded shell. On the inside of the shell there is a white "deck", which causes the shell to resemble a boat or a slipper, hence the common names. There is variability in the shape of the shell: some shells are more arched than others. Groups of individuals are often found heaped up and fastened together, with the larger, older females b ...

Taxonomy Of The Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005)
The taxonomy of the Gastropoda as it was revised in 2005 by Philippe Bouchet and Jean-Pierre Rocroi is a system for the scientific classification of gastropod mollusks. (Gastropods are a taxonomic class of animals which consists of snails and slugs of every kind, from the land, from freshwater, and from saltwater.) The paper setting out this taxonomy was published in the journal ''Malacologia''. The system encompasses both living and extinct groups, as well as some fossils whose classification as gastropods is uncertain. The Bouchet & Rocroi system was the first complete gastropod taxonomy that primarily employed the concept of clades, and was derived from research on molecular phylogenetics; in this context a clade is a "natural grouping" of organisms based upon a statistical cluster analysis. In contrast, most of the previous overall taxonomic schemes for gastropods relied on morphological features to classify these animals, and used taxon ranks such as order, superorder ...

Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Shell layers The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the Mantle (mollusc), mantle. The calcareous central layer, tracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate precipitated into an organic matrix known as c ...

Taxonomic Rank
In biological classification, taxonomic rank is the relative level of a group of organisms (a taxon) in an ancestral or hereditary hierarchy. A common system consists of species, genus, family (biology), family, order (biology), order, class (biology), class, phylum (biology), phylum, kingdom (biology), kingdom, domain (biology), domain. While older approaches to taxonomic classification were phenomenological, forming groups on the basis of similarities in appearance, organic structure and behaviour, methods based on genetic analysis have opened the road to cladistics. A given rank subsumes under it less general categories, that is, more specific descriptions of life forms. Above it, each rank is classified within more general categories of organisms and groups of organisms related to each other through inheritance of phenotypic trait, traits or features from common ancestors. The rank of any ''species'' and the description of its ''genus'' is ''basic''; which means that to iden ...
