Caledonian People's Movement (french: Mouvement Populaire Calédonien; abbreviated MPC) is a conservative and anti-separatist political party in New Caledonia founded in 2013 by Gaël Yanno, a former President of the Congress of New Caledonia and MP in the National Assembly of France representing the New Caledonia constituency. History The party was founded in 2013 following an internal dispute within the The Rally between leader Pierre Frogier and representatives Gaël Yanno and Sonia Backès. Gil Brial (born 25 November 1973) is a politician from New Caledonia who is the leader of the Caledonian People's Movement. Biography Brial was born in New Caledonia in 1973 to a prominent political family. He is of mixed race, maternal Caldoche (New Caledonians descended from French colonial settlers) descent and paternal Polynesian-Wallisian origin with his father's family having origins in Wallis and Futuna and Uvea. His paternal grandmother was Aloisia Brial, the former ruler and queen of Uvea of the polity of Uvea. Sonia Backès (née Dos Santos; born 21 May 1976) is a French politician in New Caledonia. She is the current leader of the Caledonian Republicans party and the President of the Provincial Assembly of South Province since May 17, 2019.
