Gil Brial
Gil Brial (born 25 November 1973) is a politician from New Caledonia who is the leader of the Caledonian People's Movement. Biography Brial was born in New Caledonia in 1973 to a prominent political family. He is of mixed race, maternal Caldoche (New Caledonians descended from French colonial settlers) descent and paternal Polynesian-Wallisian origin with his father's family having origins in Wallis and Futuna and Uvea. His paternal grandmother was Aloisia Brial, the former ruler and queen of Uvea of the polity of Uvea. His cousins are French Les Républicains politicians Sylvain Brial and Victor Brial and his great-uncle was Benjamin Brial. He studied at the University of Franche-Comté before studying for a higher qualification diploma in mechanical engineering at the University of the Mediterranean. Congress Of New Caledonia
The Congress of New Caledonia (french: Congrès de la Nouvelle-Calédonie), a "territorial congress" (''congrès territorial'' or ''congrès du territoire''), is the legislature of New Caledonia. It has 54 members who serve five-year terms, selected proportionally based on the partisan makeup of all three assemblies of the provinces of New Caledonia with a 5% threshold. The congress is headquartered at 1 Boulevard Vauban in downtown Noumea. Local media in New Caledonia refer to the congress as "boulevard Vauban" when referencing it. Victor Brial
Victor Brial (born 9 April 1966) is a Wallisian politician. He represented Wallis and Futuna in the French National Assembly from 1997 to 2007 and was president of the Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna twice, first from 1997 to 1999, and again from 2007 to 2010. Brial is from Sigave and is from a prominent political family. His grandmother was Aloisia Brial, ''Lavelua'' (queen) of Uvéa from 1954 to 1958, and his father is politician Cyprien Brial, who served in the Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna from 1967 to 1987. His brothers are former territorial councilor Julien Brial and former MP Sylvain Brial. His uncle Benjamin Brial was also a member of the National Assembly, while his cousin Gil Brial is involved in the politics of New Caledonia. Kanak People
The Kanak ( French spelling until 1984: Canaque) are the indigenous Melanesian inhabitants of New Caledonia, an overseas collectivity of France in the southwest Pacific. According to the 2019 census, the Kanak make up 41.2% of New Caledonia's total population — corresponding to around 112,000 people. The Kanak population is traditionally contrasted with two other groups of European descent: (1) the Caldoche, who were born in New Caledonia; and (2) the Zoreille, who live in the territory yet were born in metropolitan France. The earliest traces of human settlement in New Caledonia go back to Lapita culture, about 3000 BP, i.e. 1000 BCE. In addition, Polynesian seafarers have intermarried with the Kanaks over the last centuries. New Caledonia was annexed to France in 1853, and became an overseas territory of France in 1956. 2024 New Caledonia Unrest
In May 2024, protests and riots broke out in New Caledonia, a Sui generis collectivity, ''sui generis'' collectivity of overseas France in the Pacific Ocean. The violent protests have led to ten deaths, the declaration of a States of emergency in France, state of emergency on 16 May, deployment of the French army, and the block of the social network TikTok. Violence broke out following a controversial voting reform aiming to change existing conditions which prevent up to one-fifth of the population from voting in provincial elections.
