Calectasia Browneana
''Calectasia browneana'', commonly known as blue tinsel lily, is a plant in the family Dasypogonaceae growing as a spreading, perennial, tufted herb. It is an uncommon species, endemic and restricted to a few areas in the south-west of Western Australia. It is similar to the other species of ''Calectasia'' and has only been recognised as a separate species since a review of the genus in 2001. It is distinguished from the others mainly by the hairiness of its leaves and lack of a rhizome. Description ''Calectasia browneana'' is an undershrub with stilt roots but without a rhizome. It grows to a height of about 60 cm with many very short side branches. Each leaf blade is 8.3–15.2 x 0.2–0.4 mm tapering to a short, sharp point on the end and densely covered with fine hairs. Gregory John Keighery
Gregory John Keighery is an Australian botanist. Since 2003 he has been a senior research scientist at the Science and Conservation Division of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions of Western Australia (formerly the Department of Environment and Conservation then the Department of Parks and Wildlife). His main expertise is in the native plants of Western Australia, particularly weed flora and the Apiaceae, Liliaceae and Myrtaceae. Career Keighery has a BSc in plant genetics from the University of Western Australia. From 1974 to 1983 he worked in biosystematics at the Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, Western Australia. Kwongan
Kwongan is plant community found in south-western Western Australia. The name is a Bibbelmun (Noongar) Aboriginal term of wide geographical use defined by Beard (1976) as Kwongan has replaced other terms applied by European botanists such as sand-heide (Diels 1906) or sand heath (Gardner 1942), giving priority to the language of people who have lived continuously in the southwest for more than 50,000 years. Recent archeological evidence shows occupation of the Kwongan for at least 25,500 years. Thus, kwongan has come again into common usage for the Southwest Australian Floristic Region's shrubland vegetation and associated countryside, equivalent to South Africa's fynbos, California's chaparral, France's maquis and Chile's matorral as seen in these other regions of the world experiencing a Mediterranean climate. In plant taxonomy, commelinids (originally commelinoids) (plural, not capitalised) is a clade of flowering plants within the monocots, distinguished by having cell walls containing ferulic acid. The commelinids are the only clade that the APG IV system has informally named within the monocots. The remaining monocots are a paraphyletic unit. Laterite is both a soil and a rock type rich in iron and aluminium and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock, usually when there are conditions of high temperatures and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry periods. Eneabba, Western Australia
Eneabba is a town on the Brand Highway north of Perth, Western Australia. The area is famous for its spectacular display of wildflowers in the spring. It is also home to the Iluka Resources mineral sands facility. The first European visit to the area was in 1839 by the second disastrous George Grey expedition along the west coast. Grey and his party were forced to walk through the area after their boats were lost. On 11 April, Grey discovered and named the Arrowsmith River, after John Arrowsmith the English cartographer. Coorow, Western Australia
Coorow is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of Perth. History The townsite of Coorow was gazetted in 1893. Its name is derived from the Aboriginal name of a nearby spring, first recorded in 1872. The meaning of the name may be from the word "Curro", which is the Aboriginal word for a variety of ''Portulaca''; another source gives it as "many mists". The town experienced some flooding in 1918 following a deluge of of rain overnight. The Moore River broke its banks and caused much more severe flooding downstream at Moora. After rapid growth through the early 1920s local settlers began to seek obtaining a hotel licence for the town in 1927. The licence was granted in 1929 to Alexander Gloster who put forward a tender of £1,750, and submitted his plans for approval.
