Cairns Marlins
The Cairns Marlins are an Australian basketball team based in Cairns, Queensland. The Marlins compete in the men's NBL1 North league and play their home games at Early Settler Stadium. The team is closely affiliated with the Cairns Taipans and Cairns Basketball, the major administrative basketball organisation in the region. Team history Entry into the QBL After operating a successful basketball program in Cairns, Queensland, Cairns Basketball joined the Queensland State Basketball League in its second season in 1987. They fielded two teams, the Cairns Marlins in the men's competition and the Cairns Dolphins in the women's competition. Expansion to the NBL Between 1993 and 1998 the Marlins won four championships, prompting calls for Cairns to join the Australian National Basketball League. NBL1 North
NBL1 North, formerly the Queensland Basketball League (QBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Queensland and Northern Territory, Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Queensland partnered with the National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Queensland. NBL1 replaced the former QBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Queensland. As a result, the QBL became the north conference of NBL1. In 2022, the league will expanded into the Northern Territory with a club from Darwin. History The league was formed in 1986 as the Queensland State Basketball League. Aaron Fearne
Aaron Fearne is an Australian basketball coach and former professional player who is an assistant coach for the Charlotte 49ers men's basketball, Charlotte 49ers men's team of Conference USA. He served as the head coach of the Cairns Taipans of the Australian National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL) from 2009 to 2018. Playing career Fearne played college basketball in the United States. He played for Western Technical College, Western Wisconsin Technical College during the 1993–94 season and Mid-State Technical College during the 1994–95 season. Fearne played his final two seasons at Mayville State University from 1995 to 1997. He served as a student coach for the team during the 1997–98 season. 2019 Queensland Basketball League Season
The 2019 QBL season was the 34th and last season of competition since its establishment in 1979. A total of 30 teams contested the league (15 men and 15 women teams). The regular season was played between 6 April and 3 August 2019, followed by a post-season involving the top eight of each gender in August 2019. The schedule was announced on 22 February 2019. The Brisbane Capitals won their second men's QBL title, whilst the Southern Districts Spartans successfully defended their women's QBL title. The Gold Coast Rollers reached both grand finals, however were unable to win either. It was announced on October 30 that the 2019 QBL season was the last QBL season to be played, with the league merging with NBL1 for the 2020 season. Anthony Fisher (basketball, Born 1994)
Anthony Fisher (born 24 January 1994) is an Australian former professional basketball player. He played the majority of his career in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) and Queensland Basketball League (QBL), playing for the Ballarat Miners (2011–2015) and Cairns Marlins (2016–2019; 2021). He was a member of the Marlins' championship-winning team in 2016. He also had stints in the National Basketball League (NBL) with the Perth Wildcats and Cairns Taipans. After four years as a development player and extended squad member of the Taipans, he earned a full-time contract with the club in 2019. Jamie O'Loughlin
Jamie O'Loughlin is an Australian professional basketball coach. Coaching career O'Loughlin's coaching career started in 1999, when he was the Club Director of Coaching for Geelong's Christian College, whilst also serving as the head coach of the U12 Boys team with Basketball Geelong. After coaching the Basketball Geelong U12 and U16 Boys teams for multiple years, in 2003 O'Loughlin was promoted to coaching the U18 team. In the same year he also took teams from Christian College to multiple championships, including the Hooptime Championships, the Victorian College Championships, and the Australian Schools Championships. James Mitchell (basketball)
James Mitchell (born 15 January 1991) is an Australian professional basketball player for the Cairns Marlins of the NBL1 North. Between 2010 and 2016, he was based in his hometown of Cairns playing for the Marlins in the QBL and the Taipans in the NBL. Between 2017 and 2019, he played three seasons for the Rockhampton Rockets in the QBL and spent a season in England with the Sheffield Sharks. In 2021, he re-joined the Marlins.
