CKVO
CKVO is an AM radio station in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, broadcasting at 710 kHz. Owned by Stingray Group, CKVO first went on the air in 1974. It is an affiliate of VOCM. History Colonial Broadcasting System Ltd. was awarded a license in 1974 for a new AM station at Clarenville operating at 710 kHz with 10,000 watts day and night. In 1975, CKVO opened as a semi-satellite of VOCM in St. John's. Colonial filed an application for the establishment of studios at Clarenville, By 1995, CKVO was broadcasting 40 hours of local programming per week with the remainder of its schedule originating with VOCM. In 2000 Newcap Broadcasting Ltd. purchased CKVO and the other VOCM stations. On May 28, the CRTC renewed the licence of CKVO until August 31, 2016. VOCM is an AM radio station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, broadcasting at 590 kHz. Owned by Stingray Group, VOCM first went on the air on October 19, 1936. Through the "VOCM/Big Land FM Radio Network" of stations owned by Stingray, VOCM programming is carried throughout the province. VOCM and its sister station VOCM-FM are among the four radio stations in Canada having call signs beginning with the prefix VO, the ITU prefix issued to the Dominion of Newfoundland before its confederation into Canada in 1949. The other two, VOWR and VOAR-FM, also broadcast in St. John's; all but VOCM-FM predate the confederation. Clarenville
Clarenville is a town on the east coast of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Clarenville was incorporated in 1951. It is located in the Shoal Harbour valley, fronting an arm of the Atlantic Ocean called Random Sound. The town grew in importance after it became a junction on the Newfoundland Railway, where a branch line to the Bonavista Peninsula left the main line. The construction of the Trans-Canada Highway through the community in the 1960s resulted in it becoming a local service centre for central-eastern Newfoundland, serving 96,000 people living in 90 communities within a 100 km radius. Marystown
Marystown is a town in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, with a population of around 5,000. Situated 306 km from the province's capital, St. John's, it is on the Burin Peninsula. Until the early 1990s, its economy was largely based on shipbuilding, and it is due in part to this that the town experienced a population increase of 295% in just over a decade. The town was also dependent on the fish plant for employment. Though the shipyard still holds a presence in the town, residents have had to look elsewhere for economic subsistence in the last decade or so. The closure of the fish plants in Newfoundland has also had its hand in the decline in economic subsistence.
