ITU-R Recommendation BT.601, more commonly known by the abbreviations Rec. 601 or BT.601 (or its former name CCIR 601), is a standard originally issued in 1982 by the Comité consultatif international pour la radio, CCIR (an organization, which has since been renamed as the ITU-R, International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication sector) for encoding Interlaced video, interlaced analog video signals in digital video form. It includes methods of encoding 525-line 60 Hertz, Hz and 625-line 50 Hz signals, both with an active region covering 720 Luma (video), luminance samples and 360 chrominance samples per line. Chromaticity
Chromaticity is an objective specification of the quality of a color regardless of its luminance. Chromaticity consists of two independent parameters, often specified as '' hue'' (''h'') and ''colorfulness'' (''s''), where the latter is alternatively called ''saturation'', ''chroma'', ''intensity'', or '' excitation purity''. This number of parameters follows from trichromacy of vision of most humans, which is assumed by most models in color science. Dr. Richard R. “Dick” Green is best known for his work heading up Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs), the research arm of the cable industry, and for his work with international television standards organizations. After a more than 50-year career in telecommunications and television Green was honored with a Prime Time Emmy for lifetime achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. Primary colors are colorants or colored lights that can be mixed in varying amounts to produce a gamut of colors. This is the essential method used to create the perception of a broad range of colors in, e.g., electronic displays, color printing, and paintings. A white point (often referred to as reference white or target white in technical documents) is a set of tristimulus values or chromaticity coordinates that serve to define the color "white" in image capture, encoding, or reproduction. Depending on the application, different definitions of white are needed to give acceptable results. For example, photographs taken indoors may be lit by incandescent lights, which are relatively orange compared to daylight.
