Ashtarak
Ashtarak (Armenian language, Armenian: ), is a town and urban municipal community in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia, located on the left bank of Kasagh River along the gorge, northwest of the capital Yerevan. It is the administrative centre of the Aragatsotn province. Ashtarak is an important crossroad of routes for the Yerevan–Gyumri–Vanadzor triangle. The town plays a great role in the national economy as well as the cultural life of Armenia through several industrial enterprises and cultural institutions. It has developed as a satellite town of Yerevan. The nearby village of Mughni is part of the Ashtarak municipality. As of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 18,834. However, as per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Ashtarak is 18,000. The prelacy of the Diocese of Aragatsotn of the Armenian Apostolic Church is headquartered in Ashtarak. Aragatsotn Province
Aragatsotn ( hy, Արագածոտն, ) is a province ('' marz'') of Armenia. It is located in the western part of the country. The capital and largest city of the province is the town of Ashtarak. The Statistical Committee of Armenia reported its population was 132,925 in the 2011 census. Etymology Literally meaning "the foot of Aragats" (the highest mountain of Armenia), it is named after the Aragatsotn canton of the historic Ayrarat province of Ancient Armenia, ruled by the Amatuni noble family under the reign of the Arsacid Dynasty. Geography Aragatsotn Province occupies the northwestern part of Armenia and covers an area of 2,756 km2 (9.3% of the total area of Armenia). Diocese Of Aragatsotn
Diocese of Aragatsotn ( hy, Արագածոտնի թեմ ''Aragatsotni t'em''), is a diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church covering the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. The name is derived from the historic Aragatsotn canton of Ayrarat province of Kingdom of Armenia. The diocese was officially founded on May 30, 1996, by Catholicos Karekin I. The diocesan headquarters are located in the provincial capital Ashtarak, while the cathedral of the diocese is the Saint Mesrop Mashtots Church in the nearby village of Oshakan. Saint Marianeh Church, Ashtarak
Saint Marianeh church ( hy, Սուրբ Մարիանե եկեղեցի; pronounced ''Surp Mariané''), also known as Saint Marineh, is a medieval Armenian church located in the town of Ashtarak in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. Nearby are the churches of Karmravor Church, Karmravor (located southeast of the Saint Marianeh), Spitakavor Church of Ashtarak, Spitakavor, Tsiranavor Church of Ashtarak, Tsiranavor, and Saint Sargis Church of Ashtarak, Surp Sarkis. There is also a unique bridge of 1664 in the gorge nearby. Saint Marianeh church is clearly visible from across the gorge at Saint Sargis church. The church sits adjacent to Smbat Shahaziz road, between Perch Proshyan and Parpetsi roads though it is easiest reached via a vacant lot southeast of the complex. Saint Sarkis Church Of Ashtarak
The church of Saint Sarkis ( hy, Սուրբ Սարգիս եկեղեցի; pronounced ''Surp Sarkis'') is located at the edge of a gorge opposite the town of Ashtarak in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. It is situated at an attractive point at a promontory overlooking the gorge and offers a fine view to the three churches of Tsiranavor, Spitakavor, and Karmravor. Located in the center of town nearby is also the church of S. Mariane. Directly below Saint Sarkis in the gorge is a unique bridge built in 1664. A path leads down from the church into the gorge and across the bridge which leads to the town. Perch Proshyan
Perch Proshian ( hy, Պերճ Պռոշյան, Hovhannes Ter-Arakelian, , Ashtarak – 23 November 1907, Baku) was an Armenian writer. Biography Proshian was born in a tailor's family in Ashtarak. His education included parish school (1849–52) and a short time in the palatial school of Yerevan. In 1856 he finished the Nersisyan School of Tbilisi, where he formed his national-democratic views. After completing one year of education in Tbilisi's palatial school, Proshian came back to Ashtarak in 1857 and was appointed an inspector of the parish school. In 1859, Proshian went to Tbilisi, where he taught at the Nersisyan School. From 1879 to 1881 had worked in Ejmiatsin as teachers' inspector. In 1887 had returned to Tbilisi. Karmravor Church
Karmravor ( hy, Կարմրավոր եկեղեցի; meaning "reddish" because of the color of its dome), also known as the ''Church of Holy Mother of God'' (Սուրբ Աստվածածին, ''Surb Astvatsatsin'') is a 7th-century Armenian Apostolic church in the town of Ashtarak in the Aragatsotn Province. Architecture Surp Astvatsatsin is a small building with a cruciform central-plan and a dome with an octagonal drum and a Byzantine-style red tile roof. It measures only 19 feet 7 inches by 24 feet 6 inches, and is simply decorated with geometric and foliage patterns around the eaves and cornices. The apse is horseshoe shaped. Many of the original tiles on the roof which were laid on mortar have remained intact, and the church has had only some minor restoration during the 1950s. Mughni
Mughni ( hy, Մուղնի) is a village in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. It is located just to the north of Ashtarak town and belongs to its municipality. Until the Russian conquest, it was the southernmost town in the district of Aparan. Mughni is home to the 14th-century Saint Gevork Monastery, which was formerly a popular pilgrimage site and the seat of an archbishop. The dome of the church was rebuilt in the 1660s.
