Moldova ( , ; ), officially the Republic of Moldova ( ro, Republica Moldova), is a Landlocked country, landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The List of states with limited recognition, unrecognised state of Transnistria lies across the Dniester river on the country's eastern border with Ukraine. Moldova's Capital city, capital and largest city is Chișinău. Most of Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812, when it was Treaty of Bucharest (1812), ceded to the Russian Empire by the Ottoman Empire (to which Moldavia was a Vassal state of the Ottoman Empire, vassal state) and became known as Bessarabia. The President of the Republic of Moldova () is the head of state of Moldova. The current president is Maia Sandu, who assumed office on 24 December 2020. Duties and functions The office of the presidency in Moldova is largely ceremonial, with most of the formal political power exercised by parliament and the prime minister. However, because the president represents Moldova internationally, they have sway over the country's relationships with other countries. Nicolae Timofti
Nicolae Timofti (; born 22 December 1948 in Ciutulești, Moldavian SSR) is a Moldovan jurist and politician who was President of Moldova from 23 March 2012 until 23 December 2016. He served as head of Moldova's Supreme Magistrate Council and was elected President by parliament on 16 March 2012. Early life and education Timofti was born to Elena (born 1927) and Vasile Timofti in Ciutulești, Moldavian SSR, Soviet Union, and has four siblings. At the beginning of 1949, his family moved to Florești. On 6 July 1949, his paternal grandfather Tudor Timofti was deported by Soviet authorities to the Amur region, where he died in 1953. Timofti graduated from the law school of Moldova State University in 1972. Early activity After graduation, Timofti spent two years in the Soviet Army before beginning his career as a judge in 1976. Vlad Filat
Vladimir Filat (born 6 May 1969), commonly referred to as Vlad Filat (), is a Moldovan businessman and politician, founder of Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova. He was the Prime Minister of Moldova from 25 September 2009 to 25 April 2013. He also was appointed as the Presidents of Moldova, Interim President of Moldova for a brief period of time in 2010. Following his conviction on charges of accepting bribes, Filat was released from jail in December 2019, 6 years earlier than his initial sentence. Iurie Leancă (; born 20 October 1963) is a Moldovan politician who was the Prime Minister of Moldova from 2013 until 2015. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration from 2009 to 2013 as part of the First and Second Filat Cabinet. Early career Iurie Leancă was born on 20 October 1963 in Cimișlia. His father is Moldovan and his mother Bulgarian. He graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations and from 1986 until 1993, Leancă worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Marian Lupu
Marian Lupu (; born 20 June 1966) is a Moldovan politician who was the President of the Parliament of Moldova between 2010 and 2013. From this position he served as Acting President of the Republic from 2010 until 2012. Personal life Marian Lupu was born on 20 June 1966 in Bălţi. When Marian was six, the family moved to Chişinău. His father, Ilie Lupu (b. 1938), was a mathematics professor at the Moldova State University. His mother taught French language at the Nicolae Testemiţanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy. He had been a member of Komsomol from 1980 until 1988 and a Member of Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991. Until 1983, Lupu studied at "Gheorghe Asachi" High School of Chişinău. Igor Corman (born 17 December 1969, Ciulucani, Telenești District, Moldavian SSR) is a Moldovan politician and diplomat, deputy to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova from 2009 to 2015 and President of the Moldovan Parliament on 30 May 2013 until 29 December 2014. Moldova In The Eurovision Song Contest 2013
Moldova participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song "O mie" written by Iuliana Scutari and Pasha Parfeny. The song was performed by Aliona Moon. Songwriter Pavel Parfeni represented Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Lăutar" where he placed eleventh in the grand final of the competition. The Moldovan broadcaster TeleRadio-Moldova (TRM) organised the national final ''O melodie pentru Europa 2013'' in order to select the Moldovan entry for the 2013 contest in Malmö, Sweden. 49 artists and 126 songs competed to represent Moldova in Malmö, with 24 artists and songs being shortlisted to participate in the televised national final. After two semi-finals and a final which took place in March 2013, "A Million" performed by Aliona Moon emerged as the winner after gaining the most points following the combination of votes from a jury panel and a public televote.
