The 1989 Volvo Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Båstad, Sweden that was part of the 1989 Nabisco Grand Prix and of Tier V of the 1989 WTA Tour. The men's tournament was held from 31 July until 6 August 1989, while the women's tournament was held from 24 July until 30 July 1989. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. WTA Tier IV Tournaments
The WTA Tier IV tournaments were Women's Tennis Association fourth-level tournaments held from 1990 until the end of the 2008 season. The line-up of events varied over the years, with tournaments being promoted, demoted or cancelled. Sabrina Goleš
Sabrina Goleš (born 3 June 1965) is a former Croatian tennis player who competed for SFR Yugoslavia. Biography Sabrina Goleš was ranked no. 3 among juniors in the world in 1983 (in the juniors, she won the Italian Open and Rolex Port Washington, reached the semifinals at Roland Garros and the Orange Bowl, and the quarterfinals at the US Open). Goleš competed for SFR Yugoslavia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she made it to the finals, losing 6–1, 3–6, 4–6 to Steffi Graf. The same year, Goleš was part of the Yugoslav team that reached the Federation Cup semifinals. In 1987, Goleš won the WTA tournament in Paris and four titles in doubles. Karel Nováček
Karel Nováček (born 30 March 1965) is a retired Czech former top ten tennis player born in Prostějov, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic). In his career, Nováček won 13 singles titles and six doubles titles. His highest singles ranking was World No. 8, which he achieved on 18 November 1991. His best performance at a Grand Slam came at the 1994 US Open where he defeated Alexander Vladimirovich Volkov, Andriy Medvedev, Todd Woodbridge, Javier Frana and Jaime Yzaga before losing to Michael Stich in the semifinal. In 1997, Novacek was suspended for three months for failing a drug test at the 1995 French Open; he forfeited $185,765, but denied taking cocaine knowingly. Josef Čihák
Josef Čihák (born 19 March 1963) is a former professional tennis player from the Czech Republic who competed for Czechoslovakia. He now works as a tennis coach at TK Sparta Praha. Career Čihák was most successful as a doubles player, reaching two doubles finals in the 1989 Grand Prix, at Båstad and Saint-Vincent, winning the latter. He had previously made doubles semi-finals at Prague and Palermo in 1987 and also Prague and Munich in 1988. Bruno Orešar
Bruno Orešar (born 21 April 1967) is a Croatian businessman and former professional tennis player who competed for Yugoslavia. Tennis career Orešar had a highly successful junior tennis career. He is a three-time winner of Orange Bowl, his third win coming after beating the then-16-year-old Boris Becker in the final. At one time he was the number one ranked junior in the world. Orešar's senior career was less successful. Båstad
Båstad () is a Urban areas in Sweden, locality and the seat of Båstad Municipality, Scania County, Sweden, with approximately 5,000 permanent residents. It is however one of Sweden's most typical summer resorts. The population is presumably more than twice as large between April and September, and even larger during July.
