C-Tec
C-Tec (or The Cyber-Tec Project) was an EBM band originally formed as a side project in 1995 by Jean-Luc De Meyer (of Front 242), Jonathan Sharp (of New Mind), and Ged Denton (of Crisis n.T.i.). The name was taken from Cyber-Tec Records, who released the band's debut EP. Afterward, Jonathan Sharp left the band (due to problems with Cyber-Tec Records manager Paul M. Green), and Marc Heal (of Cubanate) joined as a full-time member. History C-Tec was conceived as a one-off project, under the name The Cyber-Tec Project, but the members decided to continue producing music under the name. The concept emerged during a dormant period for Front 242 when De Meyer (the original lead singer in 242) and other members took time to work on solo and side projects. In 1995 Synthetic Symphony released the band's debut EP '' Cyber-Tec'', which was later reissued in the United States by Fifth Colvmn Records with an alternate track listing. Cut (C-Tec Album)
''Cut'' is the second studio album by C-Tec, released on 15 February 2000 by Synthetic Symphony. The album was ranked #25 on the German Alternative Charts (DAC) Top 50 Albums of 2000. On 5 October 2018 the album was reissued as a music download with an additional track titled "Until We Disappear" and written by Marc Heal. Reception Niklas Forsberg of Release Magazine awarded the album six out of ten, describing the music as "almost exclusively overdone in the sense that the aggressiveness became too dominant" and saying "the one thing making me give ''"Cut"'' a grade above average is due to the participation of veteran, almost cult declared artist Jean-Luc De Meyer." Regen said "In many ways, ''Cut'' is an improvement on '' Darker'' – the production is cleaner and has a more modern sheen" and "the palette of sound is more consistent, making it a more cohesive album." ''Darker'' is the debut studio album of C-Tec, released on 1 September 1997 by Synthetic Symphony. The album showcases the band wanting to experiment by integrating different styles and textures into their compositions after the release of their 1995 EP '' Cyber-Tec''. On 5 October 2018 the album was reissued as a music download with an additional track titled "My Unbreakable Code" and written by Marc Heal. Reception Greg Prato of AllMusic said "the aptly titled ''Darker'' is industrial-influenced, aggressive electronic dance music with all of the necessary ingredients for success -- the vocals are sung with the mandatory pissed-off foreign accent, and the music drills into your brain with ease." Pitchfork Media described the music as having "high-energy, egomaniacal attitudes" and claimed "as any good darkwave album would, it also takes a plunge into the lonelier side of despair and isolation." Reception Flux awarded ''Darker/Cut'' a nine out of ten and said "every track has a story and a meaning, and we have no fillers or dull moments" and that the album represents "an important page in the history of electronic music, showing different facets and graced by great artists." Front 242
Front 242 is a Belgian electronic music group that came into prominence during the 1980s. Pioneering the style they called electronic body music, they are a profound influence on the electronic and industrial music genres. History Formation Front 242 were formed in 1981 in Aarschot, near Leuven, Belgium, by Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen, who wanted to create music and graphic design using emerging electronic tools. Prior to forming Front 242, Bressanutti worked on a music project called Prothese that had already produced several one-off tracks. The ''front'' part of the name comes from the idea of an organized popular uprising and the fact that the word can be translated in many languages while retaining the same meaning. The number "242" was chosen because it's "just sort of a design work". The first single by the duo, "Principles", with b-side "Body To Body," was released in 1981. Jean-Luc De Meyer
Jean-Luc De Meyer (born 1957 in Brussels) is a vocalist and lyricist who is best known as the lead vocalist of the Belgian EBM group Front 242. He started singing in the experimental group "Under Viewer" with Patrick Codenys. Both joined Front 242 early in their history and de Meyer's distinctive growl became part of the group's trademark sound as their reputation grew during the late 1980s. By the early 1990s the Front 242 formula seemed to be tiring and there were growing musical differences within the group. In 1994 the band went on hiatus while de Meyer and other members started to focus on side projects. The most prominent of these was Cyber-Tec Project - later known as C-Tec. C-Tec produced two albums before going dormant towards the end of the 1990s, whilst his other project Cobalt 60 was more coolly received. Marc Heal
Marc Heal is an English musician, television producer and writer. He is best known as an industrial music artist of the 1990s, noted for mixing metal and techno with more traditional industrial sounds. His extroverted onstage behaviour was unusual in the generally downbeat industrial genre. His most influential project was Cubanate, founded 1992 with Graham Rayner, Phil Barry and Steve Etheridge. Cubanate produced four studio albums. Their final album release, ''Interference'', came out in 1998. They reformed in 2010, and released a re-mastered greatest hits album, ''Brutalism'', in 2017. After performing several live dates again, they released the live album ''Live Brutalism'' in 2018, followed by the EP ''Kolossus'' in 2019 featuring new and remixed material. Jonathan Sharp (musician)
Jonathan Sharp is an electronic body music / industrial musician and professional sound designer from Cumbria, England, who has released music under the names New Mind, Bio-Tek, The Heartwood Institute, and others. He was also a member of the bands Cyber-Tec Project, Hexedene, and Hyperdex-1-Sect. Career Early life As a child Jonathan was a classically-trained musician, having played piano and violin. As a teenager taught himself to play guitar and his interests began drifting from classical music towards experimental guitar oriented music in the vein of Swans, as well as early industrial and electronic music including Neu! and Helden. Drawing on a fascination with the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Jonathan eventually acquired a Roland synthesizer in order to make sounds of his own. Cubanate
Cubanate are an English industrial band from London, England, founded in 1992 by Marc Heal and Graham Rayner with Phil Barry and Steve Etheridge. The group became well known for their combination of electro-industrial with distorted heavy metal guitars and techno percussion (later incorporating breakbeats). History Cubanate played their first UK tour in November 1992 supporting leftfield UK techno duo Sheep on Drugs. The group signed to Berlin's Dynamica Records shortly afterwards. Fifth Colvmn Records
Fifth Colvmn Records was a record label based in Washington, DC. The label was founded in 1990 by Zalman Fishman, owner of the nightclub FIFTH COLVMN, located in Washington D.C. The label's first release was Chemlab's debut EP Ten Ton Pressure. Jared Hendrickson of Chemlab also became the general manager for the label. Chemlab later played several dates with Nine Inch Nails, eventually attracting a distribution deal for their next release, Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar, with Metal Blade Records. The band Thud was the next artist to join the label. Heavy, loud and unrelenting, Thud became very popular amongst Metal fans and critics alike luring Eli Janney from Girls Against Boys to contribute to their debut record Life & Death and earning co-headling performances with Stone Temple Pilots. Wax Trax! Records
Wax Trax! Records is an American independent record label based in Chicago. It began as a record shop in Denver, Colorado, opened by life partners Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher, who sold the store in 1978 and moved to Chicago. In November of that year, they opened a store under the same name in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. During the 1980s and 1990s, the accompanying record label became a presence on the new wave and punk rock scenes in the city, and an outlet for European bands. The label was purchased in 1992 by TVT Records and was discontinued in 2001. In 2014, it was re-established by Julia Nash, daughter of co-founder Jim Nash. Richard Giraldi of the ''Chicago Sun-Times'' wrote, "As important as Chess Records was to blues and soul music, Chicago's Wax Trax imprint was just as significant to the punk rock, new wave and industrial genres."
