The Brisbane Football Club, nicknamed the Bears, was a professional Australian rules football club based in Queensland on the Gold Coast (relocated to Brisbane in 1993). The club participated in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL) between 1987 and 1996, and entered the league as the first of two non-Victorian expansion teams. It was the first privately owned club in the league's history. Its mascot was a koala and its main colours were maroon ( official colour of the state of Queensland) and gold (of the Queensland sunshine). Brisbane Cricket Ground
The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as the Gabba, is a major sports stadium in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia. The nickname Gabba derives from the suburb of Woolloongabba, in which it is located. Over the years, the Gabba has hosted athletics, Australian rules football, baseball, concerts, cricket, cycling, rugby league, rugby union, Association football and pony and greyhound racing. A wooden spoon is an award that is given to an individual or team that has come last in a competition. Examples range from the academic to sporting and more frivolous events. Scott McIvor
Scott McIvor (born 9 August 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer. He made his V/AFL debut with Fitzroy in 1985 but played the majority of his career in his home state of Queensland with the Brisbane Bears/Lions. Born in Brisbane, Queensland, McIvor played his junior football for Wilston Grange. Prior to starting his VFL career, McIvor captained his home state Queensland in the Teal Cup. At the age of 17, he was recruited by Fitzroy and finished second in their 1986 best and fairest before winning it in 1987. The following season, he returned home to Queensland and joined the Brisbane Bears who were playing just their second season in the AFL. McIvor remained with the club for ten seasons until they merged with Fitzroy for the 1997 season. He finished with 138 games for the Bears; only Roger Merrett and Marcus Ashcroft managed more. Zane Taylor (footballer)
Zane Taylor (born 28 February 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1980s. He spent time as a forward and midfielder during his career but it was as a half back flanker that he made the official "Queensland Team of the Century" in 2003. Although he had only just turned 23 when he started out at Geelong during the 1980 VFL season, Taylor was already a multiple "Best and Fairest" winner for Southport. He was suspended after his debut, for two games, having been found guilty of striking South Melbourne's Michael Wright with a clenched first. The suspension was costly as he was out of the seniors for seven weeks but when he returned he became a regular member of the team for the rest of the season. Gary Shaw (Australian Footballer)
Gary Wayne Shaw (born 13 February 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1980s. Queenslander Gary Shaw started at Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) club Western Districts before moving west to Western Australian Football League (WAFL) club Claremont where he was a premiership player in 1981. Warren "Wow" Jones (born 2 November 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). Frank Dunell
Frank Dunell (born 17 March 1958) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Essendon Bombers and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) club Windsor-Zillmere, Dunell was recruited by the Essendon Bombers and made his senior VFL debut in 1979. Dunell played in many positions during his career, including half back, the wing, forward pocket and at full forward. He was first recruited as a high flying forward from Windsor Zillmere however his mosT consistent form was found when he played down back. He missed the 83 grandfinal against the Hawks along with Ron Andrews and both played major roles in winning the reserve grade final against Collingwood that day. The Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) is an Australian rules football competition organised by the AFL Queensland, contested by clubs from South East Queensland. Paul Cronin
Paul Cronin (8 July 1938 – 13 September 2019) was an Australian actor who played roles in the Australian television series '' Matlock Police'' and ''The Sullivans''. He won the Silver Logie five times, including three years consecutively from 1978, the most awarded actor in Australia, alongside Martin Sacks.
