Brendan Gielow
Brendan Gielow (born October 24, 1987) is an American professional golfer. Personal life Gielow was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Eric and Renea Gielow. He graduated from Mona Shores High School in 2006, after moving as a child from Grand Rapids. In his tenure at Mona Shores, he played four years on the varsity golf team; in which he was named Mr. Golf (award given to the top high school golfer in the state) twice. He was also named to the Michigan Super Team, the All-State golf team, all four years he played. That distinction being that he is first and only person to earn that honor all four years of high school and as a freshman. He excelled in the classroom as well, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. Collegiate career Gielow enjoyed a successful freshman debut with Wake Forest. Walker Cup
The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years by leading male amateur golfers in two teams: United States, and Great Britain and Ireland. The official name is the Walker Cup Match (not "Matches" as in Ryder Cup Matches). It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). In 1921 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted an unofficial contest which was followed by official annual contests from 1922 through 1924. From 1925 they became biennial, held on even-number years. After World War II they switched to odd-numbered years. They are held alternately in the U.S., and Ireland or Britain. The cup is named after George Herbert Walker who was president of the USGA in 1920 when the match was initiated. Walker is the grandfather and namesake of George H. W. 2009 Walker Cup
The 42nd Walker Cup Match was played on September 12 and 13, 2009 at the Merion Golf Club (East course) in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, United States. Team United States won 16½ to 9½ for its third consecutive win. Format On Saturday, there are four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. On Sunday, there are again four matches of foursomes in the morning, followed by ten singles matches (involving every player) in the afternoon. This was a change from previous years (and the first format change in 46 years) when there were only eight singles matches on Sunday. In all, 26 matches are played. Each of the 26 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. The team with most points won the competition.
