Bernstorff Glacier
Bernstorff Glacier ( da, Bernstorff Gletscher, also referred to as ''A.P. Bernstorf Gletscher''), is a glacier in the King Frederick VI Coast, Sermersooq, southeastern Greenland. Like the fjord, this glacier was named after Danish statesman Andreas Peter Bernstorff. Geography The Bernstorff Glacier is a fast-flowing glacier originating in the eastern side of the Greenland Ice Sheet. It flows roughly south/southeastward and is joined by a branch flowing from the north with the confluence west of Alfheimbjerg. Odinland
Odinland ( da, Odin Land), also ''Odinsland'' in the Defense Mapping Agency Greenland Navigation charts, is a peninsula in the King Frederick VI Coast, southeastern Greenland. It is a part of the Sermersooq municipality. The peninsula is fully exposed to the influence of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In spite of the proximity of the coast and despite being located south of the Arctic Circle, an ice cap climate prevails in Odinland. History Arctic explorer Wilhelm August Graah of the Danish Navy explored this area in 1828–30, during an expedition in search of the legendary Eastern Norse Settlement and named this lonely peninsula after Odin. A large icy coastal stretch was named "Colberger Heide" by Graah, owing to its shore being lined with active glaciers and ice cliffs. The Greenland ice sheet ( da, Grønlands indlandsis, kl, Sermersuaq) is a vast body of ice covering , roughly near 80% of the surface of Greenland. It is sometimes referred to as an ice cap, or under the term ''inland ice'', or its Danish equivalent, ''indlandsis''. An acronym, GIS, is frequently used in the scientific literature. Fimbul Glacier ( da, Fimbulgletscher), is a glacier in eastern Greenland. This glacier was named after an Old Norse word for "giant" or "mighty". Alfheimbjerg
Alfheimbjerg (meaning "Alfheim Mountain" in Danish) is a mountain in the King Frederick VI Coast, Sermersooq, southeastern Greenland. It is named after Álfheimr, the abode of the elves in Norse mythology. Geography This mountain is a nunatak that rises off the southwestern end of the Odinland peninsula, between the western side of the Fimbul Glacier terminus and the northern side of the terminus of the Bernstorff Glacier. Andreas Peter Bernstorff
Andreas Peter Bernstorff (28 August 173521 June 1797), also known as Andreas Peter Graf von Bernstorff, was a Danish diplomat and Foreign Minister. He was a guardian of civil and political liberty. Background and early career Bernstorff was born in Hanover as a nephew of the statesman Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff (1712-72), whose position probably introduced him to Danish politics. His uncle induced him to study in the German and Swiss universities and travel for some years in Italy, France, England and Holland, to prepare himself for a statesman’s career. During these years he made the acquaintance of the poets Gellert and Jacobi, the writer Jean-Jacques Barthélemy, the duc de Choiseul, and Gottfried Achenwall, the statistician. After his European tour, he joined the Danish state service, first as a courtier and then from 1760 as a state official, both in foreign political and financial matters. King Frederick VI Coast
King Frederick VI Coast ( da, Kong Frederik VI Kyst) is a major geographic division of Greenland. It comprises the coastal area of Southeastern Greenland in Sermersooq and Kujalleq municipalities fronting the Irminger Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by King Christian IX Land on the north and the Greenland Ice Sheet to the west. Named after King Frederick VI of Denmark-Norway, the coast stretches for about south of the Arctic Circle. It is characterized by a succession of short fjords, steep mountains and small coastal islands.
