Ben Hannigan
Ben Hannigan (3 September 1943 – 4 February 2021) was an Irish footballer who played as an inside forward. He spent most of his career playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland. Career Hannigan had three different spells with Shelbourne as a player from 1961–66, 1972–74, and finally in the 1980–81 season. His first spell was the most successful as Shels won the league championship in 1962 after defeating Cork Celtic in a play-off and then defeating Cork Hibernians in the following year's FAI Cup final. In December 1965 he signed for Wrexham but was soon back home with Dundalk where he won the League in 1967. He scored over 50 goals for the Oriel Park side. Hannigan then signed for Shamrock Rovers in April 1969 and made his debut on 6 April. He won the FAI Cup in his first season and represented Rovers twice in European competition against Schalke 04. Dublin
Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Cork Celtic
Cork Celtic F.C., originally Evergreen United F.C., was an Irish football club based in Cork. They played in the League of Ireland between 1951 and 1979 and played their home games at Turners Cross. In 1974, they were League of Ireland champions and the following season they reached the second round of the European Cup. Dublin City Cup
The Dublin City Cup is a defunct Irish football tournament which was played for by all League of Ireland sides (and not just those from Dublin city as the name suggests). It ran from 1933 and ran uninterrupted until 1973. In the 1975–76 season it was revived and played for by sides who did not reach the League of Ireland Cup quarter-finals. In 1983–84 it was revived again but only eight teams were invited to play, the six Dublin sides ( Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, St Patrick's Athletic, UCD and Home Farm) along with Drogheda United and Dundalk. It was played in a variety of formats; from complete round robin series to straight knock out tournaments. From the 1951–52 season it was played as a knockout tournament. Noel Campbell (footballer)
Noel Campbell (11 December 1949 – 13 June 2022) was an Irish professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Career Born in Dublin, Campbell began his career in 1966 with St Patrick's Athletic F.C. in the League of Ireland where, alongside his brother Johnny, he played in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup against Girondins de Bordeaux; with Noel scoring twice in the Stade Chaban-Delmas. He had played in the 1967 FAI Cup Final losing to Shamrock Rovers. He was the club's top scorer in 1968–69 and 1969–70. While with St Patrick's he made his full international debut on 30 May 1971. The following season Campbell moved to SC Fortuna Köln in Germany. From 1971 to 1973 he made 51 appearances and scored nine goals in the Regionalliga West; he also played five games and scored two goals in the promotion play-off to the Bundesliga. The Showgrounds, Sligo Town
The Showgrounds is a stadium in Sligo, which has been home of Sligo Rovers since Rovers were formed in 1928. Overview The Showgrounds was leased until 1968 when it was then purchased for Sligo Rovers by a trust foundation representing the people of Sligo. Under the terms of the purchase it can never be mortgaged, sold or used for any commercial purposes other than sport and leisure. The Showgrounds is a 12 acre (49,000 m²) site with the stadium capacity of 3,873 seats. On 8 November 1978 Sligo opened their new covered accommodation on the Jinks Avenue in a FAI League Cup semi final against Shamrock Rovers. In November 2001 the new main stand was opened to the public for the League Cup fixture with St. Patrick's Athletic.
