Beekdaelen (; li, Baekdale ) is a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. It was formed as a merger of Nuth, Onderbanken and Schinnen. Beekdaelen has 35,853 inhabitants. It does not have a capital. The town hall of the municipality is currently situated in the village Nuth, which is the biggest population centre in the municipality with 6,520 inhabitants. Schinnen
Schinnen (; li, Sjènne ) is a village and a former municipality in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. It is home to US Army Garrison Schinnen, a support base for US personnel assigned to nearby Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum. It is also the location of Alfa Brewery, the only brewery in the Netherlands that uses an officially certified underground spring. In 2019, it merged with Nuth and Onderbanken to form Beekdaelen. Nuth
Nuth (; li, Nut ) is a village and was a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. In January 2019, the municipality merged with Schinnen and Onderbanken to form Beekdaelen. The village of Nuth has 4,595 inhabitants (1 January 2021), and is with that the largest village of the municipality. The town hall of the municipality Nuth was also situated in the village Nuth. The other villages in the municipality were Hulsberg with 3972 inhabitants, Schimmert with 3184, Wijnandsrade with 1623 and Vaesrade with 997 inhabitants (data: 1-1-2021). Wijnandsrade
Wijnandsrade (; li, Wienesrao ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen. It is notable for its castle and church and two ponds, which define the village's centre. History The village was first mentioned between 1247 and 1288 as Rode, and means "cultivated forest". In the 14th century Wijnand was added after Winant van de Bongard to distinguish from other "rade" villages. Wijnandsrade developed in the Middle Ages. There was a motte-and-bailey castle near the village in the 12th century where a chapel was erected. The remains of the motte castle are located between the church and the current Wijnandsrade Castle. The oldest parts was built in 1554. The eastern and southern wings were added between 1717 and 1719. Between 1930 and 1932, it was converted into a Franciscan monastery and extensively modified. Schinveld
Schinveld ( Limburgish: ''Sjilvend'') is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen. History The village was first mentioned in 1180 as "in uilla Schinneuelt". The etymology is unclear. Schinveld developed in the Late Middle Ages at the intersection of roads. In the early-20th century, it became a mining town. The Catholic St Eligius church is a basilica like church in Gothic Revival style with a large tower which was built between 1889 and 1890. The tower from around 1500 was completed and enlarged in 1902. Huize Heijenhoven is an estate enclosed with a moat from the late-14th century which received its current shape around 1753. In the 19th century, it was converted into a farm. Between 1976 and 1985, it was restored and converted into a restaurant. Schinveld was home to 828 people in 1840. Schimmert
Schimmert (; li, Sjömmert ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen. History The village was first mentioned in the mid-11th century as "de Scinmottera". The etymology is unclear. Schimmert is a village with a ' (type of village square). The Catholic St Remigius Church is a three-aisled church from irregular blocks of chalk which was constructed between 1924 and 1926 after a design by Pierre Cuypers and Joseph Cuypers. The tower was damaged during World War II and repaired in 1956. The water tower was built between 1926 and 1927 on the highest point of the plateau in Expressionist style. The tower measures . Merkelbeek ( li, Merkelbek) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, about 9 km northwest of Heerlen. The village was first mentioned in 1283 as Merkelbeke. The etymology is unclear. Merkelbeek started in the Early Middle Ages along a brook and developed into a road village. The Catholic St Clemens Church is a three-aisled church with built-in tower with needle spire which was built between 1876 and 1878. In 1935, the choir was replaced by a transept and choir in Gothic Revival style. Merkelbeek was home to 309 people in 1840. Jabeek (Limburgish: ''Jaobik'', English: Yescreek) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, on the German border about 8 km east of Geleen. Hulsberg
Hulsberg (Limburgish: ''Hölsberg'') is a village in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, Limburg, about 15 km east of Maastricht. History The village was first mentioned in 1147 as Huleberga, and means "hill of holly (''Ilex aquifolium'')". The area around Hulsberg was donated to the in 968. Bingelrade
Bingelrade (; li, Bèngelder ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Beekdaelen, and lies about 6 km southeast of Sittard. History The village was first mentioned in 1263 as Binghenrode, and means "cultivation of the forest of Bingo (person)". Bingelrade started in the Middle Ages as a cultivation village and developed into a road village. The Catholic St Lambertus Church has a gable roof central tower and was built between 1934 and 1935 as a replacement of the church from around 1500. The water well was built in the 19th century with chalk around a brick well from 1664. Raath Castle was built in 1686, but burnt down in 1751. In 1804 an estate was built in its place. Amstenrade
Amstenrade is a village in the municipality of Beekdaelen, in the Netherlands. It is located about 7 km northwest of Heerlen. The Amstenrade Castle is located in the village. History The village was first mentioned in 1274 as Anstenroden, and means "cultivation of the forest of Ansto (person)". Amstenrade developed in the Middle Ages on a plateau. The area was cultivated in the 13th century from the Geleenbeek onwards. It was originally a ''heerlijkheid''. In 1654, it was elevated to county. Oirsbeek
Oirsbeek is a village in the southeast of the Netherlands, part of the municipality of Beekdaelen. Between 1839 and 1982, Oirsbeek was a separate municipality. The Sint Lambertuskerk, a Roman Catholic Church, was built in 1951 by Frits Peutz on the remains of two older churches: the original church built in 1514 and a second church built in 1830. It is unknown where the name Oirsbeek originates from. It is certain that the name has to do with the creek ("beek" is Dutch for creek) that used to flow through the village. "Oir" could come from "Oer" (meaning iron-rich dirt) which is found in the area. The creek was called "vloot" by people from Oirsbeek in the past. Currently it runs through a tube in the ground under the "Grachtstraat". From there it flows in the direction of Wolfhagen, part of the village of Schinnen.
