Hulsberg
Hulsberg (Limburgish: ''Hölsberg'') is a village in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, Limburg, about 15 km east of Maastricht. History The village was first mentioned in 1147 as Huleberga, and means "hill of holly (''Ilex aquifolium'')". The area around Hulsberg was donated to the in 968. Hulsberg is a village with a ' (type of village square). The Catholic St Clemens Church is a three aisled church from 1820. In 1908, Joseph Cuypers designed a new choir. The remainder was redesigned in 1930. Hulsberg was home to 332 people in 1840. Until 1982, Hulsberg was a municipality of its own. Beekdaelen (; li, Baekdale ) is a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. It was formed as a merger of Nuth, Onderbanken and Schinnen. Beekdaelen has 35,853 inhabitants. It does not have a capital. The town hall of the municipality is currently situated in the village Nuth, which is the biggest population centre in the municipality with 6,520 inhabitants. Johannes Herman Frederik Umbgrove
Johannes Herman Frederik Umbgrove HFRSE (5 February 1899 Hulsberg (Limburg) – 14 June 1954 Wassenaar), called in short Jan Umbgrove, was a Dutch geologist and earth scientist. Life Umbgrove studied geology at Leiden University, he finished his studies in 1926. He then became employed as a paleontologist for the (Geological Survey of the Dutch East Indies), where he studied Tertiary foraminifera and corals. He also studied volcanoes, tectonics, coastal morphology and the bathymetry of the seas surrounding the Sunda Islands. From 1929 he went back to Leiden to become the assistant of his former teacher B.G. Escher. In 1930 he became professor in stratigraphy and paleontology at Delft University. His research was again multidisciplinary. He studied the paleogeography of the Dutch East Indies from the data acquired by the gravitational surveys of F.A. Jan Gerard Kerkherdere
Jan Gerard Kerkherdere (7 November 1677 – 16 March 1738) was a Dutch Latinist. He was a Latin teacher at the Collegium Trilingue in Leuven, in the Spanish Netherlands (from 1713 known as the Austrian Netherlands). Kerkherdere provoked controversy over his analyses of the Old Testament. His name in Latin was Ioannes Gerardus Falcoburgensis. Biography Kerkherdere was born in Hulsberg, Staats-Overmaas, Netherlands, in the Valkenburg aan de Geul, Valkenburg region (French: ''Fauquemont''). The latter is reflected in his Latin name. Erroneously, his place of birth is sometimes indicated as Valkenburg or Wijnandsrade. He was a son of Jan Kerkherdere, alderman of the court of Climen, and of Maria Roebroox. Mergellandroute
The Mergellandroute ("marl land route") is a tourist route through South Limburg, Netherlands, mapped out by the ANWB. The Mergellandroute goes mostly through the local hills, which are in contrast with the lesser relief found in the rest of the Netherlands. Nuth
Nuth (; li, Nut ) is a village and was a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. In January 2019, the municipality merged with Schinnen and Onderbanken to form Beekdaelen. The village of Nuth has 4,595 inhabitants (1 January 2021), and is with that the largest village of the municipality. The town hall of the municipality Nuth was also situated in the village Nuth. The other villages in the municipality were Hulsberg with 3972 inhabitants, Schimmert with 3184, Wijnandsrade with 1623 and Vaesrade with 997 inhabitants (data: 1-1-2021). Aagje ("Ada") Kok (born 6 June 1947, in Amsterdam, North Holland) is a former Dutch swimmer who ranked among the world's best in the butterfly stroke category during the 1960s. Her international career started in 1962 when, at the age of fifteen, she took the European title in the 100 m butterfly in Leipzig. She was also part of the silver 4×100 m medley relay team. At the Tokyo Olympics two years later she finished second in both events. She was also good at freestyle swimming, which showed when she took second place in the 400 metres at the 1966 European Championships in Utrecht. Valkenburg aan de Geul (; li, Valkeberg ) is a municipality situated in the southeastern Dutch province of Limburg. The name refers to the central town in the municipality, Valkenburg, and the small river Geul.
