Beekdaelen (; li, Baekdale ) is a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. It was formed as a merger of Nuth, Onderbanken and Schinnen. Beekdaelen has 35,853 inhabitants. It does not have a capital. The town hall of the municipality is currently situated in the village Nuth, which is the biggest population centre in the municipality with 6,520 inhabitants. Schinnen
Schinnen (; li, Sjènne ) is a village and a former municipality in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. It is home to US Army Garrison Schinnen, a support base for US personnel assigned to nearby Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum. It is also the location of Alfa Brewery, the only brewery in the Netherlands that uses an officially certified underground spring. In 2019, it merged with Nuth and Onderbanken to form Beekdaelen. Merkelbeek
Merkelbeek ( li, Merkelbek) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, about 9 km northwest of Heerlen. The village was first mentioned in 1283 as Merkelbeke. The etymology is unclear. Merkelbeek started in the Early Middle Ages along a brook and developed into a road village. The Catholic St Clemens Church is a three-aisled church with built-in tower with needle spire which was built between 1876 and 1878. In 1935, the choir was replaced by a transept and choir in Gothic Revival style. Merkelbeek was home to 309 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1982, when it became part of Onderbanken. Schinveld
Schinveld ( Limburgish: ''Sjilvend'') is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen. History The village was first mentioned in 1180 as "in uilla Schinneuelt". The etymology is unclear. Schinveld developed in the Late Middle Ages at the intersection of roads. In the early-20th century, it became a mining town. The Catholic St Eligius church is a basilica like church in Gothic Revival style with a large tower which was built between 1889 and 1890. The tower from around 1500 was completed and enlarged in 1902. Huize Heijenhoven is an estate enclosed with a moat from the late-14th century which received its current shape around 1753. In the 19th century, it was converted into a farm. Between 1976 and 1985, it was restored and converted into a restaurant. Schinveld was home to 828 people in 1840. Jabeek (Limburgish: ''Jaobik'', English: Yescreek) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Beekdaelen, on the German border about 8 km east of Geleen. Jabeek borders on the German village . History The village was first mentioned in 1144 as "apud Iabeche". The etymology is unclear. Jabeek developed in the Early Middle Ages as a cultivation village. The Catholic St Gertrudis is a three-aisled basilica-like church with a needle spire. The tower was built in the 15th century. The church was rebuilt between 1858 and 1859 after a design by Joseph Cuypers and the tower was enlarged. Bingelrade
Bingelrade (; li, Bèngelder ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Beekdaelen, and lies about 6 km southeast of Sittard. History The village was first mentioned in 1263 as Binghenrode, and means "cultivation of the forest of Bingo (person)". Bingelrade started in the Middle Ages as a cultivation village and developed into a road village. The Catholic St Lambertus Church has a gable roof central tower and was built between 1934 and 1935 as a replacement of the church from around 1500. The water well was built in the 19th century with chalk around a brick well from 1664. Raath Castle was built in 1686, but burnt down in 1751. In 1804 an estate was built in its place. Bingelrade was home to 100 people in 1840. Bingelrade used to be a separate municipality. In 1982, it was merged into Onderbanken. Nuth
Nuth (; li, Nut ) is a village and was a municipality in the province of Limburg, situated in the southern Netherlands. In January 2019, the municipality merged with Schinnen and Onderbanken to form Beekdaelen. The village of Nuth has 4,595 inhabitants (1 January 2021), and is with that the largest village of the municipality. The town hall of the municipality Nuth was also situated in the village Nuth.
