Buzz Burrell
Buzz Burrell (b. October 1951) is an American ultrarunner, outdoor athlete, and businessman. Burrell began trail running and ultramarathons during the infancy of the sport in America during the late 1960s and early '70s at events such as the Pikes Peak Marathon. Burrell first gained notoreity for his variety of outdoor accomplishments, especially ultra-endurance events and backcountry travel, which eventually led to his invention of fastest known time concept and associated website with Peter Bakwin. He personally set a wide array of fastest times and first attempts at routes such as the Colorado Trail and John Muir Trail. In addition to trail running as a USATF Masters Trail Champion, he has set speed records in other outdoor sports such as climbing routes in the Flatirons. An ultramarathon, also called ultra distance or ultra running, is any footrace longer than the traditional marathon length of . Pikes Peak Marathon
The Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon is a trail running competition that begins at the base of Pikes Peak, in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and climbs over 7,815 feet (2382 m) to the top of the 14,115 foot (4302 m) peak. Since 1956, the event takes place each year in late summer, with the Ascent taking place on Saturday (slightly longer than a half-marathon, at 13.3 miles), and the round-trip marathon on Sunday. Fastest Known Time
A fastest known time (FKT) is the speed record for a running or hiking route. Unlike most endurance sports competitions such as marathon world records, FKTs are self-organized and done alone or in small groups. FKTs are most popular on long trails suitable for thru-hiking or ultramarathon trail running such as the Appalachian Trail, the Pennine Way, and the John Muir Trail. Colorado Trail
The Colorado Trail is a long-distance trail running for from the mouth of Waterton Canyon southwest of Denver to Durango in Colorado, United States. Its highest point is above sea level, and most of the trail is above . USA Track & Field (USATF) is the United States national governing body for the sports of track and field, cross country running, road running and racewalking (known as the sport of athletics outside the US). Flatirons
The Flatirons are rock formations in the western United States, near Boulder, Colorado, consisting of flatirons. There are five large, numbered Flatirons ranging from north to south (First through Fifth, respectively) along the east slope of Green Mountain (elev. ), and the term "The Flatirons" sometimes refers to these five alone. Numerous additional named Flatirons are on the southern part of Green Mountain, Bear Peak, and among the surrounding foothills.
