Bulong Nickel Mine
Bulong Nickel Mine was a surface nickel and cobalt mine near Bulong, Western Australia, east of Kalgoorlie, adjacent to Lake Yindarlgooda. The mine operated for only four years and was a financial failure. Despite its short operation period, it left a legacy of environmental pollution. Because of impurities in the ore, the mine used up to of sulphuric acid per tonne of ore to remove those. History The area around Bulong originally was a gold mining location, with gold being discovered there in 1893 and mined until 1908. The nickel and cobalt laterite deposit at Bulong were discovered by the exploration department of WMC Resources in 1978 but not considered viable to be mined. WMC sold the deposit to Resolution Mining in 1987. At the start of its development in the 1990s, the Bulong nickel deposit was hailed as the potential starting point of another nickel boom in Western Australia, similar to the late 1960s and early 1970s. Bulong, Western Australia
Bulong is an abandoned town in Western Australia located east of Perth in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. In 1893 a group of prospectors, Hogan, Henry, Holmes, Kennedy and Turnbull, discovered gold on a lease they were granted called IOU. A surveyor named G. Hamilton was given instructions to design the town layout in 1894, which was to be named IOU. Hamilton suggested the name be changed to the Indigenous Australian name of a nearby spring called Bulong. The townsite was gazetted in 1895. On the back of gold mining the population of the town grew to 620 by 1900, and it boasted large number of businesses including several hotels, bakeries, accountants, butchers and stores. The town also had a hospital, school, police station, telegraph station and post office. The town's water supply was obtained from Lake Yindarlagooda, condensed on the lake's banks then pumped to the top of Mount Stuart to gravity feed to the town. The Murrin Murrin Mine is a major nickel-cobalt mining operation being conducted in the North Eastern Goldfields, approximately 45 km east of Leonora, Western Australia. The project was initiated as a joint venture between Murrin Murrin Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Anaconda Nickel Limited (whose share was 60%) and Glenmurrin Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Glencore International AG, which had a 40% share. In 2003 Anaconda changed its name to Minara Resources Limited. In November 2011, Minara Resources was fully acquired and is now wholly owned by Glencore International.
