Buccleuch, Gauteng
Buccleuch is a suburb of Sandton, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. History The suburb of Buccleuch stands on one of the old Witwatersrand farms called ''Waterfal''. The farmland had the Jukskei River flowing through it and after the creation of the city of Johannesburg the road to Pretoria, later known as the Old Pretoria Road, also passed through. The farm of 7,030 acres was purchased by John Alexander Gibson, a British immigrant, who owned a coach transport business. The farm was used as a rest area for his businesses horses and mules. When those animals were no longer used as transport the farmland was kept until his death in 1928 when it was divided amongst seven heirs and was sold. A son, Frederick Chapman Gibson, kept 1000 acres but would sell the eastern portion to AECI the owners of the Modderfontein Dynamite factory in 1938 and the portion left, surveyed as a township divided into 170 stands of 3 to 5 acres with 50 stands on the Jukskei River selling for £475 and ... Afrikaans
Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. AECI Limited () is a South African chemicals group and is listed on the JSE Securities Exchange. History The company was registered as ''African Explosives and Industries '' (AE&I) in 1924, with its headquarters in Johannesburg. It was formed as the result of a merger between the South African interests of Nobel Industries of the United Kingdom and the manufacturing arm of De Beers Consolidated Diamond Mines of Kimberley. The company's primary purpose was to provide blasting explosives and detonators to South African gold and diamond mines but AE&I was also the only South African producer of phosphatic fertilizer. Jukskei River
The Jukskei River is one of the largest rivers in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the southernmost river in the Crocodile River (West) basin. Course The Jukskei begins in Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Its original spring was on the former Doornfontein farm, which measured at 18,000 liters per hour, but has since disappeared under subsequent urban development. Now the first surface expression of the Jukskei is in Bertrams at the intersection of Queen Street and Sports Avenue where it emerges from a storm drain. From there the river flows through Bezuidenhout Valley and Bruma. It then meanders in a northerly direction through Bedfordview and Edenvale before flowing through Alexandra Township. Postal codes were introduced in South Africa on 8 October 1973, with the introduction of automated sorting. Format South African postal codes consist of four digits. South African Standard Time
South African Standard Time (SAST) is the time zone used by all of South Africa as well as Eswatini and Lesotho. The zone is two hours ahead of UTC ( UTC+02:00) and is the same as Central Africa Time. Daylight saving time is not observed in either time zone. Solar noon in this time zone occurs at 30° E in SAST, effectively making Pietermaritzburg at the correct solar noon point, with Johannesburg and Pretoria slightly west at 28° E and Durban slightly east at 31° E. Thus, most of South Africa's population experience true solar noon at approximately 12:00 daily. The western Northern Cape and Western Cape differ, however. Xhosa Language
Xhosa (, ) also isiXhosa as an endonym, is a Nguni language and one of the official languages of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Xhosa is spoken as a first language by approximately 8.2 million people and by another 11 million as a second language in South Africa, mostly in Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape and Gauteng.
