World Table Tennis Championships
The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. In the earlier days of the tournament, Hungary's men's team was a dominant force, winning the championships 12 times. This was followed by a short period of dominance by Japan in the 1950s. Table Tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. A silver medal in sports and other similar areas involving competition is a medal made of, or plated with, silver awarded to the second-place finisher, or runner-up, of contests or competitions such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, etc. The outright winner receives a gold medal and the third place a bronze medal. Doris Gubbins
Dorothy 'Dolly' Gubbins (married name Dorothy Evans) was a Welsh international table tennis player. Table tennis career She won a silver medal at the 1926 World Table Tennis Championships in the women's singles. Two years later she won a bronze medal in the women's singles and another silver medal at the 1928 World Table Tennis Championships in the women's doubles with Brenda Sommerville. She also won three English Open titles. Personal life She moved from Wales to Maidstone in Kent and her daughter June Evans was a county player for Kent. She died in 1961. English Open (table Tennis)
The English Open was a table tennis tournament in England, last staged by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Sheffield in 2011. History The tournament was first held as the English Open in 1927 by the English Table Tennis Association. Apart from a wartime break in the early 1940s, the tournament was held every year until 1980, and then every two years until the early 1990s. In 1996, the ITTF decided to include that year's English Open in Kettering as the very first event of the first ever ITTF Pro Tour. The tournament went on to feature in the ITTF Pro Tour five more times, in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2009 and in 2011, when it was held for the last time. The record for the most men's singles tournament wins is held by Richard Bergmann, who won six titles between 1939 and 1954, including two while representing Austria and four while representing England.
