Brazil and Venezuela maintain diplomatic relations. History 2000–2010 In 2001, Venezuela and Brazil opened a high-voltage power line between the two countries to supply electricity from Venezuela to energy-starved northern Brazil. Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira (born 15 February 1951) is a Brazilian diplomat serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil since 1 January 2023 under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Vieira occupied the same office between 2015 and 2016 during President Dilma Rousseff's second term. Biography Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira was born in Rio de Janeiro. He has a bachelor's degree in Law from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and graduated from the Brazilian diplomatic academy, the Rio Branco Institute, in 1974. Sanctions During The Venezuelan Crisis
During the crisis in Venezuela, governments of the United States, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Panama and Switzerland have applied sanctions against Venezuela, as well as against specific government entities and individuals associated with the administration of Nicolás Maduro. The sanctions came in response to repression during the 2014 Venezuelan protests, 2014 and the 2017 Venezuelan protests, and activities both during the 2017 Venezuelan Constituent Assembly election, 2017 Constituent Assembly election and the 2018 Venezuelan presidential election, 2018 presidential election. Analysts, including the US Government Accountability Office, have concluded that these sanctions have likely contributed to the existing decline of the Venezuelan economy. Human Rights In Venezuela
The record of human rights in Venezuela has been criticized by human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Concerns include attacks against journalists, political persecution, harassment of human rights defenders, poor prison conditions, torture, extrajudicial executions by death squads, and forced disappearances. According to the Human Rights Watch report of 2017, under the leadership of President Hugo Chávez and now President Nicolás Maduro, the accumulation of power in the executive branch and erosion of human rights guarantees have enabled the government to intimidate, persecute, and even criminally prosecute its critics. Gabriel Boric Font (; born 11 February 1986) is a Chilean left-wing politician who is the 37th and current president of Chile, serving since 11 March 2022.
